Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship in Hospitalist
Verify your ECFMG certification before applying
Most U.S. hospitals require Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates certification before extending a TN visa-eligible offer. Confirm your credentials are current and your USMLE scores are on file before targeting hospitalist openings.
Secure state licensure before your offer letter
TN visa approval for physicians requires an active, unrestricted license in the state where you'll practice. Licensing timelines vary by state, so submit your application months before your target start date to avoid delays.
Target hospital systems with existing J-1 waiver programs
Hospital groups already running J-1 visa waiver programs have established immigration infrastructure and are familiar with TN physician filings. These employers are far more likely to process your TN paperwork without internal delays or confusion.
Use Migrate Mate to find TN-sponsoring hospitalist employers
Search Migrate Mate to identify hospital systems actively hiring hospitalists with TN visa sponsorship. Filter by role and visa type to surface employers whose hiring process already accounts for Canadian and Mexican physician candidates.
Request a support letter that names the TN category explicitly
Your employer's support letter must specify that you qualify under the TN physician category and that the role is for direct patient care, not research or teaching. A vague letter is one of the most common reasons CBP delays or refuses TN admission.
Understand how Mexican TN allocations affect your timeline
Mexican nationals face a finite annual TN allocation. If the cap is reached, consular processing can stall until the next fiscal year. File early in the fiscal year and confirm current allocation status with USCIS before your employer finalizes your start date.
Hospitalist TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Hospitalist role qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes. Hospitalists qualify under the TN physician category, which covers physicians in direct patient care roles. Your employer's offer letter must confirm the position involves clinical duties, not primarily research or academic work. You'll also need an active, unrestricted state medical license in the state where you'll practice.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for Hospitalist positions?
The TN visa has no lottery, no annual cap for Canadians, and can be processed at the Canadian border the same day. H-1B visa requires a lottery entry each April and a wait of months before you can start working. For Canadian hospitalists with a firm offer, TN is typically faster and far less uncertain. Mexican nationals should account for the TN annual allocation when planning.
Where can I find Hospitalist jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals searching for TN visa sponsorship jobs in the United States. You can filter by role and visa type to find hospitalist openings at hospital systems already set up to sponsor TN physicians, saving time compared to screening general job listings manually.
What documents does my employer need to provide for my TN application?
Your employer must provide a signed offer letter or support letter that specifies your job title, a description of your duties confirming direct patient care, your salary, and the intended duration of employment. The letter should explicitly reference the TN physician category. Canadian applicants present this at the port of entry; Mexican nationals use consular processing.
Can a Hospitalist on TN status change hospital employers mid-year?
Yes, but your TN status is tied to your sponsoring employer. If you change hospital systems, your new employer must file a new TN petition or you must obtain a new TN at the border before you begin working for them. Working for the new employer before the new TN is approved is a status violation, even if your prior authorization hasn't expired.
