Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Licensed Mental Health Professional
Verify your credentials meet TN requirements
TN classification for mental health professionals requires a master's degree or higher in counseling, psychology, social work, or a related field. A bachelor's degree alone won't qualify, even with years of clinical experience and licensure.
Gather state licensure documentation early
U.S. employers frequently request proof of your Canadian or Mexican professional license alongside your degree. Prepare notarized transcripts and credential evaluations before applying, since gaps here stall offer letters and slow the TN filing.
Target employers with active clinical supervision structures
Community mental health centers, hospital systems, and federally qualified health centers frequently sponsor work visas and have experience with visa sponsorship processes. Smaller private practices often lack the HR infrastructure to manage visa sponsorship paperwork and legal requirements.
Search for verified sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Licensed Mental Health Professional jobs by employers with recent visa filings. This surfaces employers experienced with visa sponsorship, saving you from pitching to employers unfamiliar with work visa processes.
Clarify the employment structure before signing
TN status requires a traditional employer-employee relationship. Contract, per-diem, or independent arrangements don't satisfy USCIS requirements. Confirm your offer letter specifies full-time or part-time salaried employment before presenting your application at the port of entry or U.S. consulate.
Prepare a precise support letter covering scope of practice
Your employer's TN support letter must describe your duties in clinical terms, not just job titles. CBP officers evaluating mental health roles scrutinize whether the described tasks align with a specialty occupation requiring graduate-level training.

Find Licensed Mental Health Professional JobsLicensed Mental Health Professional TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Licensed Mental Health Professional role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, provided the position requires a master's degree or higher in a mental health discipline such as counseling, clinical psychology, or social work. Roles that accept any bachelor's degree or that are primarily administrative rather than clinical may not satisfy the specialty occupation standard CBP applies to TN applications.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for mental health professionals?
The TN visa has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, so you can start work as soon as CBP approves your application at the port of entry. H-1B requires winning a lottery slot before USCIS reviews your petition, which can delay employment by a year or more. Mexican citizens face a TN cap of 5,500 per year, but TN still avoids the H-1B lottery entirely.
Can Mexican mental health professionals use the TN visa the same way Canadians can?
Not exactly. Canadian citizens apply at the border and can begin work the same day CBP approves the TN. Mexican citizens must apply at a U.S. consulate and obtain a TN visa stamp before entering, which adds consular appointment and processing time. Both nationalities need a qualifying job offer and an employer-written support letter before applying.
How do I find employers who already understand TN visa sponsorship for this role?
Search Migrate Mate for Licensed Mental Health Professional positions at employers with recent visa filings. Employers listed there have experience sponsoring work visas, which means they already understand visa sponsorship processes and won't require you to educate their HR department from scratch before an offer moves forward.
What happens if my TN status expires while I'm still employed?
You can renew TN status at a port of entry or through USCIS before your current status expires. Canadians commonly do a same-day border renewal with an updated employer support letter. You're not required to leave the U.S. permanently between TN periods, but your employer must prepare the renewal documentation before your authorized stay ends.
