Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship in Oncologist
Verify your medical credentials before applying
TN visa classification for physicians requires a valid license to practice medicine in the country where you completed your degree. Confirm your credentials are recognized by the relevant state medical board before approaching U.S. oncology employers.
Target cancer centers with established visa pipelines
Academic medical centers, NCI-designated cancer centers, and large health systems routinely sponsor international oncologists and understand TN documentation requirements. Community hospitals and smaller oncology practices often lack in-house immigration support and may decline sponsorship.
Search for TN-eligible oncology positions on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters oncologist roles by TN visa sponsorship availability, so you're only reviewing employers already open to the process. Start your search there before reaching out to hospitals cold.
Negotiate the TN filing timeline into your offer
Canadian oncologists can gain TN status at the port of entry the same day, while Mexican nationals require a U.S. consulate appointment that typically takes several weeks. Build this into your start date negotiation so your employer sets realistic onboarding expectations.
Get your employer to document specialty occupation in writing
CBP officers assess whether the oncologist role genuinely requires a physician with specialty training. Ask your employer to prepare a detailed offer letter specifying board certification requirements, clinical responsibilities, and why the position demands subspecialty expertise.
Plan around state medical licensing before your TN is approved
Many states require a valid SSN or work authorization before issuing a full medical license, which creates a sequencing problem for new TN applicants. Clarify with the state medical board whether a TN approval letter or I-94 satisfies their interim licensing requirements.
Oncologist TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does the oncologist role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes. Oncologists qualify under the USMCA physician category, which covers Canadian and Mexican professionals who hold a medical degree and are licensed to practice in their home country. The role must require a physician with specialty training, and your employer's offer letter should specify that board certification or subspecialty credentials are required for the position.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for oncologists?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, so you can apply and potentially start work within days of receiving an offer. H-1B selection is random and limited to 85,000 slots annually, making it an unreliable path for most physicians. Mexican nationals face a separate TN allocation of 5,500 per year, but that cap is rarely reached. TN status also renews indefinitely in two-year increments without petitioning USCIS.
Where can I find oncologist jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for TN-eligible professionals and filters oncology positions by employers already open to sponsoring the visa. Most general job boards don't filter by visa type, so you end up applying to roles where sponsorship was never on the table. Starting with Migrate Mate removes that friction from your search.
Can a Mexican oncologist use the TN visa the same way a Canadian can?
The qualification requirements are identical, but the application process differs. Canadian oncologists can present their documentation directly at a U.S. port of entry and receive TN status the same day. Mexican nationals must apply at a U.S. consulate in Mexico and attend an interview, which adds several weeks to the timeline. Both nationalities can renew TN status in two-year increments without a cap on the number of renewals.
What happens to my TN status if I change oncology employers?
TN status is employer-specific, so moving to a new hospital or cancer center requires a new TN authorization before your first day with the new employer. Canadian physicians can apply at the port of entry with a new offer letter and required credentials. Mexican nationals need a new consulate appointment. There's no USCIS petition involved for either nationality, but the process must be completed before you begin working for the new employer.
