Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as an Orthopaedic Surgeon
Verify your medical credentials before applying
TN classification for physicians requires your medical degree, residency completion documents, and an active U.S. state medical license. Get your foreign credentials evaluated early because delays in license issuance are the most common holddup for orthopaedic applicants.
Target hospitals experienced with visa sponsorship
Academic medical centers, regional hospital systems, and multispecialty orthopedic groups with recent visa sponsorship experience are well-positioned to hire TN physicians. Prioritize employers who have an in-house immigration counsel or a designated HR contact for international physicians, as they can prepare your support letter and documentation more efficiently for TN status at your port of entry or consulate.
Distinguish physician subspecialties in your offer letter
Your employer's offer letter must specify orthopaedic surgery as your subspecialty and reference your board certification or eligibility. CBP officers scrutinize vague job descriptions, so ensure the letter explicitly ties your duties to your orthopedic training and licensure.
Understand Mexican TN applicants face a separate process
Unlike Canadians who present TN documentation directly at the port of entry, Mexican nationals apply at a U.S. consulate and require a visa stamp before entry. Build at least four to six weeks into your timeline for consular appointment scheduling.
Search for TN sponsorship jobs using Migrate Mate
Filter orthopaedic surgeon roles by TN visa sponsorship directly on Migrate Mate, which surfaces employers already familiar with the USMCA physician category so you spend time on viable opportunities rather than educating recruiters from scratch.
Confirm hospital privileges align with TN status duration
TN status is granted in three-year increments and must be renewed to maintain hospital credentialing continuity. Coordinate your TN renewal timeline with your credentialing office to avoid gaps that could affect your surgical privileges or malpractice coverage.

Does an orthopaedic surgeon qualify for TN visa sponsorship under USMCA?
Yes. Orthopaedic surgeons qualify under the USMCA Physician category, which covers both Canadian and Mexican citizens holding an MD or DO degree from an accredited institution and a valid license to practice in the state where they will work. CBP will expect your offer letter to confirm a physician-level role with duties consistent with your surgical training and board certification or eligibility.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for an orthopaedic surgeon?
TN has several practical advantages over H-1B for Canadian orthopaedic surgeons specifically. There is no annual lottery, no cap, and no government filing requirement. A Canadian applicant can receive TN status at a port of entry on the same day by presenting an employer support letter and required documentation. H-1B requires a full petition process through USCIS, a lottery selection, and a six-month wait from registration to start date, making TN far more predictable for physicians with a firm job offer.
What documents does your employer need to prepare for TN sponsorship?
Your employer must provide a signed offer letter that specifies your title as a physician or surgeon, describes your orthopaedic duties, states the terms of employment including duration, and confirms you will be working in a specialty occupation. The employer does not file a petition with USCIS for a Canadian TN applicant but should be prepared to provide supporting documentation, such as a copy of your medical license, at the border.
Can you search for orthopaedic surgeon jobs with TN visa sponsorship in one place?
Migrate Mate lets you filter orthopaedic surgeon roles by TN visa sponsorship, which means you see opportunities from employers who already understand the USMCA physician category and are prepared to provide the required offer documentation. This saves significant time compared to applying broadly and then discovering late in the process that a practice has never sponsored a TN physician.
What happens if your TN status lapses between hospital credentialing cycles?
A lapse in TN status can trigger a gap in your hospital privileges, malpractice insurance continuity, and DEA registration, all of which are credentialed on a cycle tied to your employment authorization. You can renew TN status in three-year increments at a port of entry for Canadians or through USCIS Form I-539 or I-129 for a change of status. File your renewal well before expiration to avoid any break in your ability to perform surgery.
