Verify your licensure transfers across borders
Canadian and Mexican addiction therapy credentials don't automatically satisfy U.S. state licensing boards. Research the specific clinical licensure your target state requires, such as LCDC, LADC, or LPC, before applying to roles.
Target employers experienced with visa sponsorship
Behavioral health networks, federally qualified health centers, and VA-affiliated treatment programs are experienced with visa sponsorship and often hire international clinical staff. Prioritize organizations with a track record of supporting work visa candidates over those new to the sponsorship process.
Search for TN-sponsored roles using Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters addiction therapist positions by TN visa sponsorship availability, so you're not sifting through listings from employers unfamiliar with the USMCA professional categories. Start your search there before reaching out to recruiters.
Document your degree field precisely for CBP
TN approval for counselors depends on your degree aligning with the role. Psychology, social work, and counseling degrees each map differently to CBP's occupational categories. Bring official transcripts and a credential evaluation to the port of entry.
Negotiate employer support before accepting an offer
Ask your prospective employer to provide a signed support letter specifying your job title, duties, TN classification, and employment period. Without this document, your CBP or USCIS filing cannot proceed regardless of your qualifications.
Plan for state licensure timelines during TN processing
Some states require a provisional or temporary license before you can practice while your full license application is pending. Confirm your start date aligns with your expected licensure status to avoid working outside your authorized scope.

Find Addiction Therapist JobsAddiction Therapist TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Addiction Therapist role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, but the qualification depends on how the role is classified. CBP recognizes counselors under categories like Psychologist or Social Worker depending on your degree and duties. Roles titled Addiction Therapist or Substance Abuse Counselor must map clearly to a recognized TN occupational category through your credentials and job description.
How does TN compare to H-1B for addiction therapist positions?
TN has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and can be approved at the port of entry the same day for Canadians. H-1B requires a lottery selection that accepts fewer than one in four registrants. For licensed addiction therapists from Canada or Mexico with a qualifying degree, TN is a faster and more predictable path to U.S. employment.
Can Mexican addiction therapists get TN sponsorship the same way Canadians can?
Mexican nationals follow a different process. They must apply at a U.S. consulate in Mexico rather than at the port of entry, and TN visas for Mexican professionals are subject to an annual numerical limit. The credential and job offer requirements are the same, but the processing timeline is longer and approval is not same-day.
Where can I find addiction therapist jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lists addiction therapist positions specifically filtered by TN visa sponsorship availability, which removes the step of vetting each employer's familiarity with USMCA professional categories. Behavioral health networks, community mental health centers, and hospital systems are the most active sponsors for this role category.
What happens to my TN status if my employer terminates my position?
TN status is tied to your specific employer and role. If your employment ends, your authorized status ends with it, though CBP typically allows a short grace period for transition. You'd need a new job offer and a new TN approval before starting work with any other employer. Consulting an immigration attorney at this stage is advisable.
