Verify your licensure transfers across state lines
TN visa approval for LCSW roles requires proof of active licensure, but U.S. employers hire for specific states. Confirm your Canadian or Mexican credentials clear the target state's LCSW licensing board before applying, since reciprocity rules vary significantly.
Target employers with existing TN filing infrastructure
Hospital systems, federally qualified health centers, and large behavioral health networks regularly sponsor TN workers and have HR teams familiar with the documentation. Smaller private practices often don't, which adds friction and delays your start date.
Find TN-ready LCSW roles through Migrate Mate
Filtering by visa sponsorship type saves time when searching LCSW openings. Migrate Mate surfaces employers actively open to TN sponsorship, so you're not guessing which job postings will actually move forward with your visa status.
Prepare a credential package before your first interview
TN applications for Social Worker positions require your degree transcripts, license certificate, and an employer support letter describing the clinical duties. Assembling these documents before an offer accelerates the filing timeline after you accept.
Understand Mexican citizens face a separate consular process
Mexican LCSW applicants cannot use the Canadian port-of-entry option and must schedule a consular interview. Build at least four to six additional weeks into your start date timeline to accommodate consulate appointment availability.
Licensed Clinical Social Worker Lcsw TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does the LCSW role qualify for TN visa sponsorship under USMCA?
Yes. Licensed Clinical Social Workers qualify under the TN Social Worker category, which covers professionals providing clinical assessment, psychotherapy, and case management services. You'll need an active state license and a bachelor's or master's degree in social work. The employer's support letter must clearly describe clinical duties, not administrative or generalist functions, to satisfy the category definition.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for LCSW roles?
TN is faster and more predictable for LCSW roles than H-1B. There's no annual lottery, no cap for Canadian citizens, and Canadian applicants can often gain TN status at the port of entry the same day. H-1B requires a March lottery registration, a multi-month processing period, and leaves your start date uncertain. For behavioral health employers with urgent staffing needs, TN is generally the more practical route.
What documents does my employer need to provide for my TN application?
Your employer must provide a support letter on company letterhead describing your job title, clinical duties, your professional credentials, and confirmation that the position requires a licensed clinical social worker. The letter should also state your salary and the intended duration of employment. USCIS and CBP officers use this letter to confirm the role genuinely falls under the Social Worker TN category.
Where can I find LCSW jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Most standard job boards don't filter by visa sponsorship type, which means you're manually vetting each posting. Migrate Mate is built specifically to surface roles open to TN sponsorship, so you can search LCSW positions without wasting applications on employers who won't support your visa status. It's particularly useful when you need to move quickly on a role before your current status expires.
Can I switch LCSW employers while on a TN visa?
Yes, but your TN status is employer-specific. You can't simply transfer it to a new employer the way some other statuses allow. Your new employer must file a fresh TN petition or you must obtain new TN status at a port of entry or consulate before your start date with them. Starting work before the new TN is approved puts you out of status, so coordinate timing carefully with both employers.
