Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Mental Health
Verify your credential matches the TN category
TN status for Mental Health roles requires a degree in psychology, counseling, or a closely related field. A general social work degree may not satisfy CBP's specialty occupation standard for your specific job title, so confirm the match before applying.
Target employers with active state licensure support
Many mental health positions require state licensure before you can practice independently. Prioritize employers who explicitly sponsor licensure applications alongside your TN filing, since an unlicensed offer letter weakens your petition at the border.
Search TN-sponsored mental health roles on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters Mental Health jobs by TN visa sponsorship so you avoid roles where the employer hasn't yet navigated the process. Start there to build your shortlist before reaching out to hiring managers directly.
Request a TN support letter before your border appointment
CBP adjudicates TN petitions at the port of entry for Canadians. Your employer's support letter must specify your job title, duties, and the USMCA category your role falls under. Vague letters are the leading cause of same-day refusals.
Understand Mexican nationals face a separate consular process
Unlike Canadians, Mexican citizens must schedule a visa interview at a U.S. consulate and cannot self-petition at the border. Book your appointment well in advance, since consulate wait times vary significantly by location and season.
Carry documentation of supervised clinical hours
CBP officers reviewing Mental Health TN applications often ask for evidence of post-degree supervised practice. Bring a letter from a licensed supervisor or your state licensing board confirming completed clinical hours to support the specialty occupation determination.

Find Mental Health JobsMental Health TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Mental Health professionals qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes. Psychologists holding a doctoral degree qualify under the TN psychologist category. Licensed counselors and therapists may qualify under related categories depending on their degree level and job duties. CBP makes the final determination at the time of application, so your employer's support letter must clearly map your credentials to the correct USMCA professional category.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Mental Health roles?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, which means you can apply any time of year and receive a decision the same day at the port of entry. H-1B requires surviving a random lottery with roughly a 25% selection rate. The trade-off is that TN is nonimmigrant by design and cannot be used as a direct pathway to a green card the way H-1B can.
Where can I find Mental Health jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals navigating TN visa sponsorship. You can filter Mental Health roles by TN eligibility, which removes the guesswork of contacting employers who have no experience with the process. Most general job boards don't filter by visa category, so you end up spending time on roles that won't move forward.
Can I switch employers while on a TN visa in a Mental Health role?
Yes, but your new employer must file a new TN petition before you begin work. TN status is employer-specific, so you cannot carry it from one organization to another. Canadians can process the new TN at a port of entry; Mexican nationals must return to a U.S. consulate. There is no formal transfer process, and working for the new employer before approval is a status violation.
Does state licensure affect my TN visa eligibility as a Mental Health professional?
State licensure is separate from TN eligibility, but it affects what roles you can actually perform once you arrive. CBP approves TN based on your degree and the job offer, not your license status. Some employers will only extend offers to applicants who are already licensed or license-eligible in their state, so confirming your credentials qualify for reciprocal licensure in the target state is a practical step before you apply.
