TN Visa Mental Health Counseling Jobs
Mental health counseling roles qualify for TN visa sponsorship under USMCA for Canadian and Mexican professionals holding a master's degree or higher in counseling or a related field. Employers file directly with CBP at the border for Canadians, bypassing the H-1B lottery entirely. State licensure requirements vary and affect where you can practice.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship in Mental Health Counseling
Verify your degree meets TN requirements
TN visa classification for mental health counseling requires a master's degree or higher in counseling, psychology, or a closely related field. A bachelor's alone won't qualify, even with years of clinical experience. Confirm your credential before applying.
Research state licensure before accepting offers
Your TN status doesn't guarantee you can practice in your target state. Each state sets its own licensure requirements, and some don't recognize Canadian credentials without additional steps. Clarify licensure eligibility before committing to a job offer.
Target employers already navigating clinical visa sponsorship
Community mental health centers, hospital systems, and federally qualified health centers regularly sponsor international clinicians and understand TN documentation. Smaller private practices often lack HR infrastructure to support the process, slowing your start date.
Search TN-sponsored counseling roles through Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to find mental health counseling positions with verified TN visa sponsorship. Filtering by visa type saves time and connects you directly with employers who have already agreed to support the filing process.
Prepare a complete TN support letter from your employer
CBP officers adjudicate TN petitions at the port of entry. Your employer's support letter must specify your job title as mental health counselor, your degree field, and that the role is temporary. Vague letters cause denials on the spot.
Understand the Mexican TN cap before your employer files
Mexican nationals are subject to an annual TN allocation, unlike Canadians who receive TN status at the border with no cap. If you're Mexican, confirm your employer knows to file a petition with USCIS and budget for potential wait times.
Mental Health Counseling TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does mental health counseling qualify as a TN visa occupation?
Yes. Mental health counseling falls under the psychologist or social worker categories recognized under USMCA, provided you hold a master's degree or higher in counseling, psychology, or a closely related discipline. CBP officers assess your job duties and credentials at the port of entry, so your employer's support letter must clearly describe clinical counseling responsibilities, not general social services work.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for mental health counselors?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadians, meaning you can start work as soon as CBP approves your application at the border. H-1B requires entering a lottery with roughly 25% selection odds and waiting up to a year before starting. TN is also renewable indefinitely in three-year increments, making it a practical long-term option for counselors without the uncertainty of H-1B registration.
Where can I find mental health counseling jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for TN visa job seekers and lets you search mental health counseling roles by visa type, filtering out positions where sponsorship isn't available. This matters because many counseling postings don't specify visa support upfront, and contacting employers one by one is inefficient. Starting with verified TN-sponsored listings shortens your search considerably.
Can I practice as a licensed counselor on a TN visa in any U.S. state?
No. TN status authorizes you to work in the U.S. but doesn't override state licensure boards. Each state independently determines whether your foreign credentials and supervised hours meet their licensing standards. Some states accept Canadian or Mexican degrees with minimal additional requirements while others require supplemental evaluations or supervised clinical hours before issuing a license. Confirm your target state's requirements before you begin the job search.
What documents do I need for a mental health counseling TN application?
You'll need a valid passport, a detailed employer support letter stating your job title, duties, and that the position is temporary, and proof of your qualifying degree such as transcripts and your diploma. If your degree is in a language other than English, bring a certified translation. Canadians present these at a land border or preclearance airport. Mexican nationals submit a petition to USCIS and attend a consular interview at a U.S. embassy in Mexico.
