Job Summary
The Department of Psychology and Counseling at The University of Texas at Tyler invites applications for an Assistant/Associate Professor of Counseling to start in the Spring of 2027 or the Fall of 2027. This is a full-time tenured or tenure-track position with a nine-month academic year appointment in the clinical mental health counseling (CMHC) program in the Department of Psychology and Counseling within the School of Health Professions at the University of Texas at Tyler. The CACREP-accredited CMHC program at the University of Texas at Tyler is an in person 60-hour Master of Arts degree. Students who graduate with a degree from our program meet the coursework requirements for licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Pursue an active scholarly research agenda.
- Teach graduate courses in counseling.
- Supervising CMHC students in their internship and practicum coursework.
- Advise counseling students.
- Provide service to the counseling profession at a local, state, and/or national levels, and participate collaboratively in program, department, college and university governance.
- A strong candidate for this position may also be considered for the role of Program Coordinator for the CMHC program. Responsibilities include providing leadership for the program, coordinating course scheduling, and preparing accreditation reports for CACREP.
- The faculty will also have opportunities to work and collaborate with our other psychology programs when desired.
- Maintain regular on-campus presence.
- Attend departmental meetings.
Required Qualifications
- Earned a doctorate in counselor education (preference given to applicants with a degree earned from a CACREP-accredited program) by August, 2027.
- Professional experience and research expertise in counseling and supervision in clinical settings.
- Evidence of university teaching and research activity appropriate for an assistant professor candidate.
- The ideal candidate will have demonstrated a strong professional counselor identity, the ability to conduct a focused and sustained program of research and scholarship, and experience teaching graduate students, and strong interpersonal skills.
- Additionally, applicants should have a license or be license eligible in Texas.

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
