Verify your credential category before applying
TN visa eligibility for Child Therapists depends on whether your role is classified under psychologist or social worker. Confirm your licensure matches the USMCA category your employer will use before submitting a single application.
Target employers with behavioral health billing infrastructure
Outpatient clinics, school districts, and hospital systems that bill insurance for mental health services are structured to sponsor TN workers. They have HR teams familiar with immigration paperwork, unlike private solo practices that rarely do.
Translate your provincial or national license before interviewing
Canadian therapists often hold licenses from bodies like the CRPO or CCPA. U.S. hiring managers need a credential equivalency letter showing your licensure maps to a state-recognized standard before they'll initiate TN sponsorship paperwork.
Ask employers how they classify the role at offer stage
Some employers list Child Therapist roles under social worker TN categories, others under psychologist. The classification affects your documentation requirements, so clarify this before you accept an offer and before USCIS processes anything.
Search TN-specific job listings through Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters Child Therapist listings by TN visa sponsorship, so you're not cold-applying to employers who've never filed a TN petition. Start your search there to avoid wasting time on roles that won't move forward.
Use the support letter to resolve degree field mismatches
If your degree is in counseling psychology rather than clinical psychology, your employer's support letter must explicitly connect your academic background to the TN job duties. A vague letter is the most common reason CBP requests additional documentation.
Child Therapist TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Child Therapist role qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes, but the qualifying USMCA category depends on your credentials and how the employer defines the role. Positions requiring a master's degree in social work typically fall under the social worker category. Roles requiring a doctoral degree in psychology fall under psychologist. Your employer must match the job description to the correct TN category, or CBP can deny entry at the border.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for Child Therapist roles?
The TN visa has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadian citizens, and can be approved the same day at a U.S. port of entry. H-1B visa requires a lottery registration each March, a months-long filing process, and significant employer costs. For Child Therapists who qualify under USMCA, TN is a faster and more predictable path, though it does not lead directly to a green card the way H-1B can.
Can Mexican Child Therapists use the TN visa the same way Canadians can?
Not exactly. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a port of entry or a U.S. consulate without a cap. Mexican citizens must apply at a U.S. consulate abroad and are subject to a 5,500 annual visa allocation under USMCA. Consular appointment availability and wait times add additional planning time for Mexican applicants compared to Canadians.
How do I find Child Therapist employers that sponsor TN visas?
Most general job searches don't filter by visa sponsorship type, which means a lot of wasted applications. Migrate Mate is built specifically to surface Child Therapist roles from employers who sponsor TN visas, so you can focus on opportunities that are actually viable for your immigration status rather than guessing from a standard listing.
What documents does my employer need to sponsor my TN visa as a Child Therapist?
Your employer needs to provide a detailed support letter on company letterhead that confirms your job title, duties, the TN category being used, your start date, and a statement that you meet the USMCA professional qualifications. You'll need to bring that letter, your degree transcripts, your current license, and a valid Canadian or Mexican passport to your border crossing or consular appointment.
