Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
Verify your credentials meet TN requirements
TN classification requires a valid nurse practitioner license in your destination U.S. state and proof of Canadian or Mexican citizenship. Confirm your provincial or national NP credentials translate to a recognized U.S. state license before you apply.
Target behavioral health systems with TN history
Psychiatric hospitals, federally qualified health centers, and VA-affiliated outpatient clinics regularly sponsor foreign-trained NPs. These employers already have HR teams familiar with TN documentation, which shortens the offer-to-start timeline compared to smaller private practices.
Get your state NP license before negotiating offers
Most U.S. employers won't advance a TN offer without an active state license in hand. State licensing boards for NPs often require CGFNS verification for foreign-trained applicants, so start that process three to six months before your target start date.
Clarify prescriptive authority scope with each employer
Mental health NP roles vary by state in what prescriptive authority you're granted. Confirm the employer's job description matches your licensed scope, since a mismatch between your TN job title and actual duties can create complications at the CBP port of entry.
Search TN-sponsoring employers through Migrate Mate
Identifying which employers actively sponsor TN visas for nurse practitioners takes more than a keyword search. Migrate Mate filters roles by TN eligibility and employer sponsorship history, so you're targeting positions where the hiring team already understands the process.
Prepare a TN support letter that matches your duties
Your employer's TN support letter must describe your duties using language that maps to the USMCA nurse practitioner category. A generic offer letter citing 'NP services' is often insufficient. Ask HR to specify psychiatric assessment, medication management, and treatment planning explicitly.

Find Mental Health Nurse Practitioner JobsMental Health Nurse Practitioner TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Mental Health Nurse Practitioner qualify for the TN visa?
Yes. Nurse practitioners are explicitly listed under the USMCA TN visa schedule, and the classification covers specialty practice areas including psychiatric and mental health. You'll need a valid NP license in the U.S. state where you'll work, proof of Canadian or Mexican citizenship, and a qualifying job offer from a U.S. employer.
How does the TN visa compare to the H-1B for mental health NP roles?
The TN visa has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and can be approved at a port of entry the same day for Canadian citizens. H-1B requires a lottery selection that many applicants don't survive. For Mental Health Nurse Practitioners with a confirmed job offer, TN is almost always faster and more predictable than H-1B.
Where can I find Mental Health Nurse Practitioner jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically to connect Canadian and Mexican professionals with U.S. employers who sponsor TN visas. Rather than filtering through generic job listings and guessing at sponsorship willingness, you can search roles where employers have already indicated TN eligibility for nurse practitioner positions.
Can I switch employers after starting work on a TN visa as a mental health NP?
Yes, but the TN status is employer-specific. If you change jobs, your new employer must file a new TN petition or you must obtain new TN classification at the port of entry before you begin working for them. Continuing to work for the old employer during the transition is fine until the new TN is approved.
What documents does a Canadian mental health NP need to get TN status at the border?
You'll need a valid Canadian passport, a signed offer letter that describes your duties and maps to the nurse practitioner TN category, proof of your NP license in the destination state, and evidence of your nursing credentials. CBP officers review these at the port of entry and can approve TN status on the spot without advance USCIS filing.
