Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Licensed Therapist
Verify your credential qualifies before applying
TN status for therapists requires a qualifying degree in a mental health field, not just a clinical license. Confirm your master's or doctoral credential maps directly to the USMCA's Social Worker or Psychologist category before targeting employers.
Target employers with existing behavioral health infrastructure
Hospital systems, community mental health centers, and large group practices already have HR teams familiar with employment-based immigration. These employers are more likely to draft a compliant TN support letter without needing you to explain the process from scratch.
Search for TN-sponsored therapist roles on Migrate Mate
Filter by TN visa to find Licensed Therapist openings where employers are already open to sponsorship. Migrate Mate surfaces roles matched to your visa category so you're not cold-applying to positions that won't support your status.
Get your state license before your start date
Many states require a license to practice independently, and USCIS expects evidence of professional standing. Applying without a valid state license, or with only a temporary permit, can complicate the employer support letter and raise questions at the port of entry.
Brief your employer on the support letter requirements
The offer letter must specify your professional title, the specialty occupation description, your Canadian or Mexican citizenship, and that the position is temporary in nature. HR teams unfamiliar with TN often omit these elements, which delays entry or triggers a CBP referral.
Plan around Mexican TN processing timelines
Mexican citizens must schedule a consular interview, unlike Canadians who can present at the border. Build at least four to six weeks of lead time into your start date to account for appointment availability and document review at the U.S. consulate.

Find Licensed Therapist JobsLicensed Therapist TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Licensed Therapist role qualify for TN visa status?
Licensed Therapist positions can qualify under the TN category if your role and credentials align with a recognized USMCA occupation such as Psychologist or Social Worker. You'll need at least a master's degree in a relevant clinical field. Roles focused on general counseling without a graduate clinical credential are harder to support, so the job description and your degree must clearly correspond.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for therapist roles?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, so there's no registration gamble in March each year. H-1B selection is random and limited to 85,000 slots annually. For therapists who are Canadian or Mexican citizens, TN is typically faster and more predictable. The tradeoff is that TN is employer-tied and does not lead to permanent residence on its own, unlike H-1B.
What documents does a Licensed Therapist need to present at the border for TN entry?
Canadian citizens entering at a port of entry need the employer's TN support letter, proof of your qualifying degree, your professional license if the state requires one, and a valid passport. You do not file a petition with USCIS in advance. CBP adjudicates TN status on the spot, so your documents need to be complete and internally consistent before you travel.
How can I find Licensed Therapist jobs that already support TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. You can filter for Licensed Therapist roles by TN visa category to find employers who are open to sponsoring your status, rather than spending time on applications that will stall when sponsorship comes up. This is particularly useful if you're relocating from Canada or Mexico and need an offer letter before your entry date.
Can I switch employers while on TN status as a Licensed Therapist?
Yes, but TN status is employer-specific. If you change jobs, your new employer must support a fresh TN entry or file a change of status through USCIS. Canadian citizens can present at the border with the new employer's documentation. You cannot simply transfer your existing TN to a new employer the way some other visa categories allow portability after a certain filing threshold.
