Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship in Nurse Practitioner
Verify your licensure transfers across state lines
Your Canadian or Mexican nursing credentials must map to a valid U.S. state NP license before any employer can file your TN visa paperwork. Compact Nurse Licensure Agreement membership varies by state, so confirm where your target employers operate before applying.
Target health systems with dedicated immigration coordinators
Large hospital networks and multisite outpatient groups routinely sponsor work visas and have HR staff familiar with visa sponsorship processes and documentation requirements. Smaller private practices often lack experience with visa sponsorship, which can create delays that derail offers at the final step.
Distinguish NP scope of practice in your offer letter
CBP officers review your employer support letter to confirm the role qualifies as a TN specialty occupation. Your letter must explicitly state that the position requires an advanced practice registered nurse with a graduate-level nursing degree, not just any RN credential.
Use Migrate Mate to find employers with recent visa filings
Search Migrate Mate to surface health systems and clinics with recent visa filings who are experienced with visa sponsorship for clinical roles. Filtering by employers experienced with visa sponsorship cuts the time you spend educating HR departments about work visa processes they've already managed.
Prepare your CGFNS evaluation before the offer stage
Mexican NPs trained outside the U.S. frequently need a Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) credential evaluation to satisfy state licensing boards. Starting this process before you receive an offer removes a four-to-six-week bottleneck from your TN timeline.
Look for employers experienced with work visa sponsorship
Your employer will need to prepare documentation supporting your qualifications and role as a Nurse Practitioner, including evidence of your credentials and the legitimacy of the position. Knowing the typical salary range for your specialty and metro helps you identify offers that align with market rates—an important consideration before accepting a position.
Nurse Practitioner TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Nurse Practitioner occupation qualify for a TN visa?
Yes. Nurse Practitioner is explicitly listed as a qualifying TN occupation under USMCA. To qualify, you must hold a valid state NP license and a graduate-level nursing degree, and your employer's support letter must describe a role requiring advanced practice nursing credentials, not general registered nursing duties.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Nurse Practitioners?
TN has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and no multi-month USCIS adjudication wait. Canadian NPs can receive TN status at a port of entry the same day. H-1B visa requires a lottery selection that most applicants don't win, followed by months of processing. For NPs who meet TN eligibility, TN is the faster and more predictable path.
Where can I find Nurse Practitioner jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically to surface employers with active TN visa sponsorship history for clinical and healthcare roles. Searching by occupation and location filters out employers who have never filed a TN petition, so you spend your time on employers who already understand the process and are prepared to support your application.
What documents does my employer need to file my TN visa as a Nurse Practitioner?
Your employer must prepare a support letter on company letterhead that states your job title, duties, required credentials, and confirmation that the role requires an NP with a graduate nursing degree. You bring this letter, your state NP license, and your degree credentials to your port of entry interview (for Canadian citizens) or consular appointment (for Mexican citizens).
Can Mexican Nurse Practitioners access TN status the same way Canadians can?
Mexican citizens qualify for TN status for the same NP occupation but must apply through a U.S. consulate in Mexico rather than at a port of entry. Mexico also has an annual TN allocation of 5,500 visas. In practice, this cap has not historically been exhausted, but Mexican applicants face a consular processing timeline of several weeks that Canadian NPs avoid by entering at the border.
