Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Triage Registered Nurse
Verify your NCLEX and state license first
TN visa classification for nurses requires a valid U.S. state RN license, not just a Canadian or Mexican credential. Start the NCLEX and state licensure process before targeting employers, since triage roles often require active licensure at time of offer.
Target hospitals with dedicated international hiring pipelines
Emergency departments, Level I trauma centers, and large health systems routinely hire internationally trained triage nurses and understand TN documentation requirements. Facilities with existing Canadian or Mexican staff on TN status are least likely to decline on sponsorship grounds alone.
Get your employer support letter right
The TN support letter must specify your triage nursing duties, confirm baccalaureate-level education, and state the job is temporary. A letter that describes generic nursing work without linking responsibilities to your degree field is a common reason CBP requests additional evidence.
Distinguish your triage scope from general floor nursing
When discussing your role with HR, clarify that triage nursing involves clinical assessment, acuity scoring, and protocol-based decision-making tied to your RN training. Framing the position precisely helps the employer draft a TN support letter that withstands CBP review.
Search TN-specific job listings through Migrate Mate
Standard job boards don't filter by visa type or TN eligibility. Use Migrate Mate to find Triage Registered Nurse roles at employers with recent visa filings, so you're applying to organizations experienced with sponsoring work visas.
Prepare for Mexican TN consular processing timelines
Mexican citizens must apply at a U.S. consulate and cannot use port-of-entry processing like Canadians. Build four to eight weeks into your start date negotiation to account for consular appointment availability and document review.
Triage Registered Nurse TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does triage nursing qualify as a TN visa occupation?
Yes. Triage Registered Nurses qualify under the Nurse category in the USMCA TN occupation list, provided you hold a valid U.S. state RN license and a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree in nursing. The role must involve professional nursing duties, which triage assessment and acuity classification clearly satisfy under CBP's standard review.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for triage nursing roles?
The TN visa has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and can be issued at a port of entry the same day for Canadian citizens. H-1B visa requires employer sponsorship months in advance, entry into a random lottery, and a wait until October 1 to start work. For Canadian and Mexican triage nurses, TN is a faster, more predictable path to U.S. employment.
Can a Canadian triage nurse start work immediately after entering on TN status?
Yes. Canadian citizens approved at the port of entry receive TN status on the spot and can begin work the same day or as agreed with the employer. You'll need your employer's support letter, proof of RN licensure, and educational credentials with you at the border. No advance filing with USCIS is required for Canadians.
Where can I find triage nursing jobs that include TN visa sponsorship?
Most general job boards don't filter by visa type, so you can't easily tell which employers are prepared to sponsor TN status. Migrate Mate is built specifically for USMCA professionals and surfaces triage nursing roles where employers have a history of TN sponsorship, saving you from applying to positions where sponsorship will be declined.
Does my employer need to file anything with USCIS for my TN visa as a triage nurse?
For Canadian citizens, no USCIS filing is required. You and your employer prepare the support letter and credential documents, and CBP approves TN status directly at the port of entry or U.S. consulate. For Mexican citizens, a consular appointment is required, but the employer still does not file a petition with USCIS. TN status for nurses is employer-supported, not employer-petitioned.
