Verify your NCLEX before applying
TN visa sponsorship for RN roles requires a valid U.S. state nursing license, not just your Canadian or Mexican credential. Pass the NCLEX and hold an active license in the state where you'll work before approaching employers.
Target hospitals with travel nurse programs
Contract RN roles at hospital systems that run internal travel nurse programs are far more likely to have experience with visa sponsorship generally. Their HR teams are already familiar with work visa processes and won't treat your visa status as a dealbreaker. Since TN visas don't require complex government filings like other work visas do, employers with established travel nurse programs often find the TN process straightforward to support.
Ask staffing agencies about direct-hire TN pathways
Many travel nursing agencies place RNs on contract but won't sponsor TN status themselves. Ask explicitly whether the end client hospital, not the agency, will be listed as the TN petitioner on your application documents.
Use Migrate Mate to filter TN-ready employers
Searching for contract RN roles without filtering for employer visa experience wastes time. Migrate Mate surfaces employers with recent work visa filings so you can focus on facilities already equipped to handle visa sponsorship.
Bring certified documents to the Canadian port of entry
Canadian RNs can get TN status approved same-day at a land border or airport. Bring your nursing license, NCLEX confirmation, job offer letter specifying RN duties, and proof of Canadian citizenship. CBP officers adjudicate on the spot.
Confirm specialty unit assignments match your TN petition
If your offer letter says ICU but you're later reassigned to a general medical floor, your TN classification could be questioned at renewal. Make sure your contract reflects your actual unit and duties before the petition is filed.
Contract Nurse RN TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Contract Nurse RN job title qualify for a TN visa?
Yes. Registered Nurse is an explicitly listed occupation under the USMCA TN visa category, so contract RN roles qualify as long as the position requires RN-level duties and you hold an active U.S. state nursing license. The contract nature of the role doesn't disqualify you, but the employer named in your offer letter must be the petitioner on the TN application.
How does the TN visa compare to the H-1B for contract RN positions?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadians, which means you can start a contract RN role without waiting for a selection result that may never come. H-1B visa requires employer sponsorship months in advance and is subject to a highly competitive lottery. For Canadian and Mexican RNs with a qualifying job offer and active NCLEX license, TN is a faster, more predictable path to U.S. employment.
Can a travel nursing staffing agency sponsor my TN visa?
It depends on the agency's structure. Some staffing agencies act as the employer of record and can sponsor TN status directly. Others place you at a hospital where the end client is technically the employer. Before accepting any contract offer, confirm in writing who will appear as the petitioning employer on your TN documentation, because mismatches between your petition and actual worksite can create problems at renewal.
Where can I find contract RN jobs that already offer TN visa sponsorship?
Most general job boards don't filter by employer visa sponsorship experience, so you end up cold-applying and educating HR teams from scratch. Migrate Mate is built specifically to surface healthcare employers with recent visa filings, which identifies facilities experienced with work visa sponsorship and shortens your job search significantly.
How long does TN visa sponsorship last for a contract RN role, and can it be renewed?
TN status is granted in increments of up to three years and can be renewed an unlimited number of times, provided you maintain a qualifying job offer and active RN license. For contract RNs, each renewal should reflect your current placement. If your contract ends between renewals, you'll need a new offer letter from the next employer before filing the next TN petition.
