Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Psychiatric Social Worker
Confirm your MSW meets TN requirements
CBP requires a master's degree in social work for TN classification as a Psychiatric Social Worker. A bachelor's in social work alone won't qualify, even with years of clinical experience. Pull your official transcripts before any employer conversation.
Verify state licensure transfers across borders
Most U.S. psychiatric social worker roles require LCSW or equivalent state licensure. Canadian provinces and Mexican states issue separate credentials, so confirm which U.S. state your target employer is in and research that state's licensure-by-endorsement process early.
Target employers experienced with visa sponsorship
Health systems, community mental health centers, and VA-affiliated facilities are more likely to support work visa sponsorship than private practices. Search Migrate Mate to filter psychiatric social worker roles by employers with recent visa filings and experience sponsoring work visas, which may indicate openness to TN sponsorship for qualified candidates.
Get the offer letter language right before filing
Your TN support letter must specify the psychiatric social work duties, your MSW credential, and the employment period. Vague job descriptions citing general counseling tasks have led to CBP denials. Ask your employer to align the letter with the USMCA occupational definition.
Prepare for CBP questions on scope of practice
CBP officers at land ports may ask how your role differs from general social work or counseling. Be ready to explain that psychiatric social workers provide clinical mental health assessment and intervention under physician or psychiatry-team supervision, which aligns with the TN occupational category.

Find Psychiatric Social Worker JobsPsychiatric Social Worker TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Psychiatric Social Worker qualify for a TN visa?
Yes. Social Worker is an explicitly listed TN occupation under the USMCA treaty. CBP interprets this to cover psychiatric social workers who hold a master's degree in social work. You'll need your MSW, any required state licensure documentation, and an employer support letter that describes clinical psychiatric social work duties specifically.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for this role?
The TN visa has no lottery, no annual cap for Canadian applicants, and can be obtained at a Canadian port of entry in a single day. H-1B requires employer sponsorship months in advance, a lottery selection, and USCIS petition approval. For licensed psychiatric social workers from Canada, TN is substantially faster to obtain and simpler to renew.
Do I need a U.S. state license to get TN sponsorship as a Psychiatric Social Worker?
CBP doesn't technically require U.S. state licensure to issue the TN visa itself, but most employers hiring for clinical psychiatric social work roles require it as a condition of employment. Many states offer licensure by endorsement for Canadian LCSW equivalents, though processing timelines vary by state and can affect your actual start date.
How do I find employers that will sponsor a TN visa for Psychiatric Social Worker roles?
Use Migrate Mate to search for Psychiatric Social Worker positions at employers with recent visa filings. Health systems, federally qualified health centers, and inpatient psychiatric facilities are among the employer types most experienced with visa sponsorship for this occupation. Targeting employers experienced with work visa processes increases the likelihood of finding HR teams familiar with supporting international talent.
Can a Mexican national get TN sponsorship as a Psychiatric Social Worker?
Yes, but the process differs from the Canadian path. Mexican nationals cannot use the border port-of-entry method and must file a TN petition through USCIS. The annual cap of 5,500 TN visas for Mexican nationals means timing matters. Start employer conversations early and build petition processing time into your expected start date.
