Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a School Nurse
Verify your nursing license transfers cleanly
Each U.S. state issues its own nursing license, and your Canadian or Mexican credential must be evaluated before you can practice. Apply for endorsement through the destination state's board of nursing well before your start date to avoid delays at the border.
Target school districts with documented TN experience
Public school districts that operate across multiple states or large urban districts are more likely to have HR teams familiar with TN filings. Ask directly whether the district has sponsored TN professionals before accepting a first-round interview.
Get your degree credential evaluation completed early
CBP officers at the port of entry will assess whether your nursing degree meets the baccalaureate standard. A foreign credential evaluation from a recognized evaluation service resolves ambiguity before your appointment, especially for Mexican licenciatura holders whose degree names differ from U.S. conventions.
Negotiate who prepares the TN support letter
The employer must provide a support letter describing your role, qualifications, and that the position qualifies as a TN specialty occupation. Draft a template yourself and offer it to HR so the letter addresses CBP's specific requirements for the Nurse category, reducing back-and-forth after an offer is made.
Search for TN-sponsoring school nurse roles on Migrate Mate
Filter your job search by TN visa eligibility to find school districts actively offering sponsorship. Migrate Mate surfaces roles where employers have indicated TN support, saving you from applying to positions where HR has never encountered a TN petition.
Prepare for NCLEX if your license is not yet U.S.-issued
Many school districts require a U.S.-issued RN license before making an offer. If you hold only a Canadian or Mexican nursing credential, passing the NCLEX is typically required to obtain state licensure, and that step must happen before your TN paperwork can reference an active U.S. license.

Find School Nurse JobsSchool Nurse TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a School Nurse role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes. Nurses are explicitly listed as a qualifying profession under the USMCA TN category. To qualify, you must hold a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree in nursing and possess a valid license in the U.S. state where you'll work. School nurse positions at public and private K-12 institutions both qualify, provided the role involves professional nursing duties rather than administrative work alone.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for school nurse positions?
The TN visa has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, making it far more predictable than H-1B for school nurse hiring. Canadian applicants can receive TN status at the port of entry on their start date. Mexican citizens require a consular appointment but still avoid the H-1B lottery entirely. The TN also processes faster and at lower cost to the employer, which makes school districts more willing to offer sponsorship.
Can a Canadian school nurse get TN status at the border without an immigration attorney?
Yes. Canadian citizens apply for TN status directly at a U.S. port of entry and do not need to file a petition with USCIS in advance. You'll present your job offer letter, proof of nursing licensure, and your degree credential. CBP adjudicates most TN applications the same day. Mistakes in documentation are the most common cause of delays, so having a complete package matters more than legal representation.
What documents does the school district need to provide for TN sponsorship?
The employer must supply a signed support letter on company letterhead describing your job title, the professional nature of the position, your qualifications, and your anticipated period of employment. The letter does not need government pre-approval before you present it at the border or consulate. Some districts are unfamiliar with this process, so arriving with a draft letter aligned to CBP's Nurse category requirements helps move things forward.
Where can I find school nurse jobs that already offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals seeking TN-sponsored roles in the U.S. You can filter by job title and visa type to find school nurse postings where the employer has confirmed TN eligibility, rather than spending time on applications that lead to HR teams unfamiliar with the TN category. This is especially useful for Mexican citizens who need consular processing and cannot afford a last-minute employer refusal.
