Gather credential documentation before applying
CBP officers evaluate your clinical training record, not just your degree. Bring your program transcripts, any national certification like CMA or CCMA, and a letter confirming your hands-on clinical hours if your credential doesn't spell it out.
Target employers already familiar with TN filing
Large hospital networks, multi-location urgent care chains, and federally qualified health centers process TN visa petitions more reliably than solo practices. Their HR teams have done this before and won't stall your offer over paperwork uncertainty.
Ask your employer to specify your duties in writing
The TN category requires your role to match the USMCA occupational definition. A vague offer letter listing only job titles gets flagged. Request a duty-by-duty breakdown that maps your clinical responsibilities to the qualifying Medical Assistant scope.
Search for TN-sponsored Medical Assistant roles on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters job listings by TN visa sponsorship availability, so you're not cold-applying and discovering sponsorship issues after an offer. Search specifically for Medical Assistant roles to reach employers already open to TN candidates.
Understand the Mexican TN cap before you plan your timeline
Mexican nationals face a 5,500-per-year TN allocation across all qualifying occupations. Apply earlier in the fiscal year and confirm your employer is filing promptly, since slots tighten as the year progresses and delays can push your start date.
Negotiate your start date around CBP processing, not HR calendars
Canadian applicants can cross the border and get TN status approved in a single day. Mexican applicants using consular processing need to factor in appointment wait times. Align your employer's onboarding timeline with the filing route that applies to your citizenship.
Medical Assistant TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Medical Assistant role actually qualify for TN status?
Yes, Medical Assistant is listed as a qualifying occupation under the USMCA TN category. The key requirement is that your duties align with the defined scope of the role and that you hold the appropriate educational credential or certification. CBP reviews both your offer letter and your credential documentation at the port of entry, so both need to be specific and consistent.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Medical Assistants?
TN is significantly more accessible for this role. There's no annual lottery, no employer registration process, and no cap for Canadian citizens. Canadians can obtain TN status the same day at a port of entry. H-1B visa requires lottery selection, a lengthy USCIS filing process, and a wait of several months minimum. For most Canadian and Mexican Medical Assistants, TN is the faster and more predictable path.
Where can I find Medical Assistant jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for TN visa job seekers and filters listings by sponsorship availability. You can search Medical Assistant roles and connect with employers who have already confirmed they'll support TN candidates, which saves time compared to applying broadly and discovering sponsorship limitations after an offer is extended.
What credentials do Canadian and Mexican Medical Assistants need to qualify for TN status?
You typically need a post-secondary credential in medical assisting, such as a diploma or certificate from an accredited program, along with any relevant national certification like CMA, CCMA, or RMA. CBP will review your transcripts and certification documents at the border. A strong employer offer letter that details your clinical duties is equally important and should complement your credential package.
Can my Medical Assistant TN status be renewed, and for how long?
TN status is granted in up to three-year increments and can be renewed indefinitely as long as you maintain a qualifying job offer. There's no lifetime limit on renewals. Canadian citizens can renew at a port of entry, while Mexican nationals renew through the U.S. consulate. Your employer needs to provide updated documentation confirming your ongoing role with each renewal.
