Verify your state license transfers cleanly
TN visa approval for OTAs requires active U.S. state licensure, not just eligibility. Confirm your Canadian or Mexican credentials have been evaluated by the relevant state board before you start applying, since licensing timelines vary significantly by state.
Target healthcare systems with established TN pipelines
Inpatient rehabilitation centers, skilled nursing facilities, and pediatric therapy networks regularly sponsor TN visa OTAs. These employers already have HR teams familiar with the USMCA professional list and won't need convincing that the category exists.
Get your support letter drafted before negotiations end
Your employer's TN support letter must specify your OTA job duties, your associate degree or higher, and your intended work period. Requesting a draft early in the offer stage prevents delays at the border or consulate caused by vague or incomplete employer letters.
Search for OTA sponsorship roles using Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter occupational therapy assistant roles by TN visa sponsorship, so you're applying only to employers already prepared to support the filing. This cuts the time spent educating hiring managers about USMCA eligibility.
Understand the Mexican TN cap before accepting an offer
Mexico's TN allocation is capped, unlike Canada's. If you're a Mexican citizen, confirm with USCIS that the annual cap hasn't been reached for the fiscal year before you accept an offer contingent on TN approval. Your employer should verify current allocation status when preparing your support letter for consulate application.
Prepare a credential equivalency letter for your associate degree
CBP officers sometimes question whether a Canadian college diploma in occupational therapy assisting meets the U.S. associate degree standard. A written equivalency statement from an accredited credential evaluation service strengthens your border or consulate application packet considerably.
Occupational Therapy Assistant TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does the OTA role qualify for TN visa sponsorship under USMCA?
Yes. Occupational Therapy Assistants appear on the USMCA TN professional list under the broader category of medical and allied health professionals. You must hold at least an associate degree in occupational therapy assisting and active state licensure in the state where you'll be working. Your employer must provide a support letter confirming your role and qualifications.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for OTA roles?
TN is significantly more accessible for OTAs than H-1B visa. There's no annual lottery, no cap for Canadian citizens, and approvals for Canadians happen at the port of entry without USCIS petition filing. H-1B requires employer sponsorship months in advance and lottery selection. TN also renews indefinitely in three-year increments as long as you maintain a valid job offer and qualifications.
Can I find OTA jobs that already support TN sponsorship before I apply?
Yes, and targeting those employers saves significant time. Migrate Mate lets you search occupational therapy assistant roles specifically filtered for TN visa sponsorship, so you're only engaging employers who understand USMCA eligibility and are prepared to issue the required support letter. This avoids lengthy back-and-forth with HR teams unfamiliar with the category.
What documents do I need for TN sponsorship as an OTA?
You'll need your associate degree or higher in occupational therapy assisting, proof of active state licensure, a detailed employer support letter stating your job title and duties, and your Canadian or Mexican passport. Canadians present these at a U.S. port of entry. Mexican citizens apply at a U.S. consulate and receive a TN visa stamp before traveling.
Does my Canadian college diploma count as an associate degree for TN purposes?
It can, but CBP officers have discretion on equivalency determinations. A two-year Canadian college diploma in occupational therapy assisting from an accredited institution is generally accepted, but having a credential evaluation letter from a recognized evaluation service makes the case clearly and reduces the risk of a secondary review or denial at the border.
