Verify your credentials meet TN requirements
TN visa approval for physicians requires a valid license to practice in the U.S. state where you'll work. Confirm your medical degree, residency, and cardiology fellowship documentation are apostilled or officially translated before targeting roles.
Target health systems with existing TN experience
Large academic medical centers and regional health systems regularly sponsor TN physicians and know the documentation requirements. Focus on cardiology departments at institutions that already employ international physicians to reduce delays from employer unfamiliarity.
Secure state medical licensure before the offer stage
Most U.S. states require an active medical license before a TN petition is valid. Starting the state licensure process early prevents your employer from stalling at the offer stage while waiting on credential verification boards.
Use Migrate Mate to identify TN-sponsoring cardiology employers
Search Migrate Mate to find cardiology employers with active TN visa sponsorship history, filtered by location and role type. Leading with verified sponsorship data cuts weeks off your employer research phase.
Clarify the support letter scope with your employer
Your employer's TN support letter must specify your cardiology subspecialty, the qualifying USMCA professional category, and your licensed practice state. A vague letter is one of the most common reasons CBP requests additional documentation at the port of entry.
Understand Mexican citizens face a consular filing requirement
Unlike Canadians who can present TN documentation at a land border, Mexican cardiologists must schedule a nonimmigrant visa interview at a U.S. consulate. Build at least four to eight weeks into your timeline for consular appointment availability.
Cardiologist TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does the cardiologist occupation qualify for a TN visa?
Yes. Physicians are explicitly listed as a qualifying professional category under USMCA, and cardiology is recognized as a physician specialty within that designation. You must hold a valid license to practice medicine in the U.S. state where you'll be employed and have a bona fide job offer from a U.S. employer before petitioning for TN status.
How does TN compare to H-1B for cardiologist roles?
The TN visa has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and can be processed at the border in a single day for Canadian citizens. H-1B visa requires winning a random lottery and waiting up to a year before you can start work. For cardiologists with a valid U.S. medical license and a qualifying job offer, TN is typically the faster, more reliable path to starting clinical practice.
What documents does a cardiologist need for TN sponsorship?
You'll need your medical degree, cardiology fellowship completion certificate, proof of state medical licensure, board certification documentation if applicable, and a detailed support letter from your U.S. employer confirming your role, your USMCA professional category, and your intended practice location. Canadian citizens present these at a port of entry; Mexican citizens submit them at a consular interview.
How can I find cardiology employers that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you search for cardiology positions filtered by TN visa sponsorship history, so you can focus on employers who have already navigated the process for international physicians. This is more efficient than cold-applying to institutions that may be unfamiliar with TN requirements for specialty medical roles.
Can a Mexican cardiologist enter the U.S. on a TN visa the same way a Canadian can?
No. Canadian citizens can apply for TN status directly at a U.S. port of entry or airport by presenting their documentation to CBP. Mexican citizens must obtain a TN visa stamp at a U.S. consulate before traveling, which requires scheduling an in-person interview. Processing timelines at Mexican consulates vary, so Mexican cardiologists should account for this when negotiating a start date with their employer.
