Match your credentials to the right TN category
TN visa status for Mental Health Therapists is claimed under Social Worker or Psychologist, not a standalone therapist category. Your degree field, state license type, and job duties must align with the category your employer selects before filing.
Document your state licensure before approaching employers
Most U.S. employers require an active state clinical license, such as an LCSW, LPC, or LMFT, before sponsoring a TN. If your Canadian provincial license needs NASW or NBCC credential verification, start that process three to four months ahead.
Target employers with existing cross-border hiring infrastructure
Community mental health centers, federally qualified health centers, and hospital systems regularly hire Canadian and Mexican clinicians and understand TN documentation requirements. Smaller private practices often have no experience preparing the required support letter.
Use Migrate Mate to find Mental Health Therapist roles with active TN sponsorship
Search Migrate Mate to surface Mental Health Therapist positions where employers have confirmed TN visa sponsorship. Filtering by TN eligibility saves you from applying to roles where the employer has never handled cross-border professional filings.
Request a detailed employer support letter before your port-of-entry appointment
For Canadian applicants, the CBP officer at the port of entry evaluates your employer's support letter on the spot. The letter must specify your job title, duties, required degree, and TN category. Vague letters cause same-day refusals.
Understand how Mexican TN applicants navigate the consular process
Mexican citizens must schedule a TN visa interview at a U.S. consulate and cannot apply at the border like Canadians. Processing times vary by consulate location, so schedule your appointment as soon as your employer's support letter is finalized.
Mental Health Therapist TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Mental Health Therapist job title directly qualify for TN status?
Not automatically. The USMCA TN list does not include a standalone Mental Health Therapist category. Your employer must fit the role under Social Worker, which requires a baccalaureate or licenciate degree in social work, or under Psychologist, which requires a state license to practice. The job duties in the offer letter must match the category selected.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for Mental Health Therapists?
TN has significant advantages for this role. There is no annual lottery, no cap for Canadian citizens, and approval can happen the same day at a port of entry for Canadians. H-1B visa requires filing months in advance, entering a lottery with roughly a 25 percent selection rate, and waiting for an October 1 start date. TN renewals are also indefinite as long as you maintain qualifying employment.
Do employers need to file anything with USCIS before a Canadian applies for TN status?
No. Canadian TN applicants do not require employer pre-filing with USCIS. The employer provides a support letter, and the applicant presents it directly to a CBP officer at a designated U.S. port of entry. The CBP officer adjudicates TN status on the spot. Mexican citizens follow a different process requiring a consular visa appointment and a DS-160 application.
Where can I find Mental Health Therapist jobs that explicitly offer TN visa sponsorship?
Most general job postings do not specify TN sponsorship because employers often confuse it with H-1B. Migrate Mate filters Mental Health Therapist roles by TN visa eligibility, connecting you with employers who have confirmed they can support TN filings. Searching this way prevents wasted applications to employers unfamiliar with the cross-border process.
Can I switch employers after starting work on a TN visa as a Mental Health Therapist?
Yes, but you need to obtain new TN authorization before starting with the new employer. Canadian citizens can return to a port of entry with a new employer support letter and receive approval the same day. Mexican citizens must apply for a new TN visa at a U.S. consulate. You cannot transfer TN status between employers the way H-1B portability works under AC21.
