Verify your license transfers across borders
Provincial and national psychology licenses don't automatically satisfy U.S. state licensure requirements. Confirm your credentials meet the state board's standards before accepting an offer, as TN visa status lists your work location and employer.
Target healthcare systems with prior TN filings
Hospital networks and university-affiliated clinics regularly sponsor TN psychologists and have HR teams familiar with the documentation. Prioritize employers whose job postings explicitly reference work authorization support or international candidates.
Get your doctoral transcripts evaluated early
U.S. employers frequently request a credential evaluation confirming your doctorate is equivalent to an American Ph.D. or Psy.D. Commission a NACES-member evaluation before you receive an offer to avoid delays during the hiring process.
Distinguish your role clearly in the offer letter
CBP officers assess TN eligibility at entry, so your offer letter must specify that the position requires a doctoral degree in psychology. Vague titles like 'mental health clinician' create risk; 'Clinical Psychologist' aligned with the USMCA category is what you need.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring employers fast
Searching broadly wastes time on employers unfamiliar with TN filings. Migrate Mate filters Clinical Psychologist openings by employers with active TN visa sponsorship history, so you spend your time on roles that are actually viable.
File TN renewal before your status expires
TN status is granted in three-year increments with no statutory maximum on renewals. Canadians can renew at a port of entry; Mexicans must return to a consulate. Start gathering updated employer documentation at least 60 days out.
Clinical Psychologist TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Clinical Psychologist role qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes. Clinical Psychologist is an explicitly listed USMCA TN category. To qualify, you must hold a doctoral degree in psychology from a recognized institution and be licensed at the state or provincial level. The role must require those credentials, not merely prefer them. CBP or the consulate will verify the degree and license documentation at the time of application.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for Clinical Psychologists?
TN visa sponsorship is far more accessible for this role. There is no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and no multi-month wait for a petition approval. Canadians can often enter on the same day with employer documentation in hand. H-1B visa selection is random and capped at 85,000 slots annually, making TN the practical first choice for Canadian and Mexican clinical psychologists.
Where can I find Clinical Psychologist jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. It surfaces Clinical Psychologist positions at employers with a documented history of TN and other work visa sponsorship, so you're not guessing which organizations will actually support your application. Filtering by sponsorship history dramatically shortens the job search timeline for Canadian and Mexican applicants.
Does my Canadian or Mexican psychology license satisfy U.S. requirements for TN status?
For TN entry purposes, CBP requires proof of licensure in psychology but does not mandate U.S. state licensure at the time of application. Practically, however, most U.S. employers will require you to obtain or be eligible for the state license before you begin practicing. Check the specific state board's requirements, as supervised-hours and exam standards vary significantly by state.
Can I switch employers while on TN status as a Clinical Psychologist?
You can change employers, but TN status is employer-specific. You cannot simply start working for a new employer on your existing TN. Canadians can apply for a new TN at a port of entry with updated employer documentation before beginning the new role. Mexican citizens must apply at a U.S. consulate for a new TN tied to the new employer.
