Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as an Emergency Room RN
Get your CGFNS credentials verified early
Mexican nurses must complete CGFNS credentialing and pass NCLEX before any U.S. employer can proceed with TN sponsorship. Start this process six to twelve months before your target start date to avoid offer delays.
Target hospitals experienced with work visa sponsorship
Emergency departments at large health systems and trauma centers often employ nurses on work visas and have experience with visa sponsorship processes. Ask HR directly whether they have sponsored work visa holders before and whether their legal team handles visa matters in-house or through outside counsel. For TN positions, confirm they're familiar with the TN sponsorship process, which requires an employer support letter and direct application at the U.S. port of entry (for Canadian citizens) or U.S. consulate (for Mexican citizens).
Use Migrate Mate to find ER RN roles with TN sponsorship
Filter by TN visa sponsorship and RN role type on Migrate Mate to surface emergency department positions at employers already familiar with the filing process, cutting out hospitals that will stall or decline after you disclose your visa need.
Clarify which TN entry method your employer supports
Canadians can enter at a port of entry with an employer support letter and job offer, while Mexican nurses require a consular visa stamp. Confirm your employer understands this distinction before accepting an offer to avoid last-minute complications.
Negotiate your offer letter based on market rates and qualifications
TN status for nurses requires your offered wage to be reasonable for the role and location. Request a written offer before your start date and ensure it clearly specifies your position, duties, and compensation so you're prepared to present it at your port of entry (for Canadians) or U.S. consulate (for Mexicans).
Plan TN renewal around your ER shift schedule
TN status is granted in up to three-year increments with no cap on renewals. File your renewal before expiration and account for peak ER staffing periods, since gaps in status can disrupt shift assignments and hospital credentialing.

Find Emergency Room RN JobsEmergency Room RN TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does the TN visa cover Emergency Room RN positions specifically?
Yes. The TN visa's Nurse category covers registered nurses working in clinical settings, including emergency departments. Your job title must reflect RN duties and your employer's offer letter should describe direct patient care responsibilities. Nurse practitioner or charge nurse roles with additional scope may require closer review of the job description against the TN Nurse category definition.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Emergency Room RN roles?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadians, so you can start as soon as you have a qualifying job offer and valid licensure. H-1B requires entering a randomized lottery with roughly one-in-four odds, and you'd wait until October 1 even if selected. For ER nurses with Canadian citizenship, TN is a faster and more predictable path to U.S. employment.
What license do I need before an employer can sponsor my TN visa?
You need an active RN license in the state where you'll be working. Canadian nurses who passed NCLEX in Canada can apply for state licensure by endorsement. Mexican nurses must first complete CGFNS credentialing, then pass NCLEX, then apply for state licensure. Your employer can't initiate TN sponsorship until state licensure is confirmed, so begin this process well before your intended start date.
Where can I find Emergency Room RN jobs that already offer TN sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lists Emergency Room RN positions filtered by TN visa sponsorship, so you can focus on employers who have already committed to the filing process rather than negotiating sponsorship from scratch. This matters in ER hiring because hospitals sometimes rescind offers once they learn a candidate needs visa support, and working from a pre-screened list reduces that risk.
Can I switch ER employers after entering the U.S. on TN status?
Yes, but TN status is employer-specific. If you change hospitals, you need a new TN petition tied to your new employer before you start working for them. Canadians can typically handle this at a port of entry with updated documentation. Mexican nurses need a new consular appointment for the updated visa stamp, so build in enough lead time when planning a job change.
