Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Certified Medical Assistant
Verify your credentials meet TN standards
TN visa classification for Medical Assistants requires proof of a post-secondary credential in medical assisting or a related allied health field. A diploma from a Canadian college or Mexican technical institute typically satisfies this, but confirm the credential maps to the job description before applying.
Target ambulatory and outpatient clinic employers
Physician-owned practices, urgent care networks, and federally qualified health centers regularly sponsor TN workers and move faster than large hospital systems. These employers often handle TN filings in-house without outside counsel, which shortens the offer-to-start timeline.
Ask employers about their TN filing experience upfront
Many smaller clinics have never filed a TN for a Medical Assistant and may confuse it with H-1B visa. During interviews, ask directly whether their HR team has processed TN status before and whether they use a third-party administrator for immigration paperwork.
Use Migrate Mate to find employers experienced with visa sponsorship
Not every Medical Assistant posting will flag visa sponsorship. Migrate Mate filters roles by employers with recent visa filings and sponsorship experience, so you're not cold-applying to clinics that will reject your application the moment immigration comes up.
Prepare a TN support letter before your border appointment
Canadian applicants processed at a port of entry need an employer-issued support letter that specifies your job title, duties, credentials, and that the role qualifies as a specialty occupation. CBP officers review this on the spot, so vague language about duties will slow or block entry.
Understand the Mexican TN visa stamp process differs from Canadian
Mexican citizens cannot self-petition at the border. You'll schedule a consular interview at a U.S. Embassy in Mexico, where the employer's support letter and your credential documents are reviewed. Processing typically runs two to four weeks after your appointment.
Certified Medical Assistant TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Certified Medical Assistant role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, provided the position falls under the USMCA's Medical/Allied Professional category and you hold a qualifying post-secondary credential in medical assisting or a related allied health discipline. The job offer letter must describe duties that align with that classification. Roles limited to administrative tasks without a clinical component may not qualify, so the offer letter wording matters.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Certified Medical Assistant positions?
TN has no annual lottery, no numerical cap for Canadians, and no multi-month USCIS adjudication wait. H-1B selection is random and only opens once per year. For Medical Assistant roles, TN is almost always the faster and more predictable path, assuming your credentials and the employer's support letter are in order. Mexican citizens face a separate TN allocation but still avoid the H-1B lottery entirely.
What documents does my employer need to provide for TN sponsorship?
Your employer must produce a signed support letter on company letterhead that includes your name, job title, specific clinical duties, your qualifying credential, and a statement that the role is temporary in nature. For Canadian applicants processed at the border, this letter is reviewed by a CBP officer in real time. For Mexican applicants, it's submitted as part of the consular package. USCIS also reviews it for I-129 petitions.
How do I find Medical Assistant jobs that actually offer TN sponsorship?
Most job postings for Medical Assistants don't specify TN visa sponsorship, which means you'd otherwise need to screen employers manually. Migrate Mate surfaces Medical Assistant roles from employers with a track record of sponsoring TN workers, so you can focus on positions where your immigration status won't disqualify you at the offer stage.
Can I change employers after starting work on TN status as a Medical Assistant?
Yes, but your TN status is tied to your current employer. To move to a new clinic or practice, your new employer must either file a new I-129 petition with USCIS or, if you're Canadian, you can reapply at a port of entry with updated employer documentation. You cannot simply transfer TN status between employers the way you can with some other visa categories.
