Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Licensed Veterinary Technician
Verify your credential meets TN requirements
TN sponsorship for veterinary technicians hinges on holding a credential that maps to 'scientific technician or technologist.' Canadian CVMA certification and Mexican state-issued licenses are both accepted, but you'll need official documentation confirming your scope of practice.
Target multi-location veterinary groups first
Corporate and multi-clinic veterinary groups have HR teams familiar with work authorization paperwork. Independent practices often haven't sponsored before, which adds friction to your offer process and can delay your start date significantly.
Confirm your job offer letter covers TN specifics
Your offer letter must state your job title, duties, and that the position qualifies under the scientific technician or technologist category. A vague letter is the most common reason CBP asks clarifying questions at the port of entry.
Use Migrate Mate to find visa-sponsoring employers
Searching by role and visa type saves you from applying to practices that don't sponsor international professionals. Migrate Mate filters veterinary technician openings at employers experienced with visa sponsorship, so you're not starting from scratch on employer outreach.
Prepare for CBP review of your duties description
Canadians entering at land border crossings receive TN approval from CBP officers on the spot. Bring a one-page summary of your daily duties alongside your offer letter, as officers sometimes request clarification that your role is technical rather than general animal care.
Plan your Mexican TN application through a U.S. consulate
Mexican nationals apply for TN visas at a U.S. consulate rather than at the border, and appointment availability varies by city. Schedule your consular interview as soon as your employer confirms sponsorship to avoid delays in your start date.

Find Licensed Veterinary Technician JobsLicensed Veterinary Technician TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Licensed Veterinary Technician qualify for a TN visa?
Yes. Licensed Veterinary Technicians qualify under the TN visa's scientific technician or technologist category, provided your role involves applying specialized technical knowledge under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian. Your credential, whether a CVMA certificate or a Mexican state veterinary technician license, must document your technical scope of practice, not just your job title.
How does the TN visa compare to the H-1B for veterinary technicians?
The TN visa has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, making it far more predictable than the H-1B, which requires registration and selection before you can even file. For Mexican nationals, TN allocations are limited but still processed consularly without a lottery. TN also doesn't require a formal USCIS petition, which shortens the timeline considerably for most candidates.
Will my employer need to file paperwork with USCIS for my TN sponsorship?
Canadian citizens don't require USCIS involvement at all. TN status is granted at the port of entry by CBP, so your employer prepares a support letter rather than filing a petition. Mexican nationals do require a visa issued at a U.S. consulate, but USCIS is still not involved in that process. Your employer's main obligation is providing accurate documentation of your role and qualifications.
How do I find veterinary clinics that will sponsor my TN visa?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for TN-eligible professionals and lets you filter veterinary technician roles by sponsorship availability, so you can target employers who have hired international candidates before. Approaching employers who already understand work authorization reduces back-and-forth during the offer stage and speeds up your start date.
Can I renew my TN visa if I stay with the same veterinary employer?
Yes. TN status is issued in up to three-year increments and can be renewed indefinitely as long as you maintain a qualifying job offer and your employer continues to support your sponsorship. There's no maximum number of renewals. Canadians renew at the port of entry or through USCIS, while Mexican nationals must return to a U.S. consulate for each renewal.
