Verify your ECFMG certification before applying
TN visa physician applicants must hold a valid ECFMG certificate if they graduated from a foreign medical school. Confirm your certificate is current and your state medical license is active before submitting applications to U.S. emergency departments.
Target hospital systems with dedicated immigration support
Large academic medical centers and hospital networks with in-house legal or HR immigration teams process TN petitions faster and with fewer delays than community hospitals relying on outside counsel for the first time.
Ask employers to write a support letter before your start date
Your employer will prepare a support letter documenting your role, qualifications, and salary to present at your port of entry. Have your employer draft this letter in parallel with contract negotiations so it's ready when you need it for your TN admission process.
Search TN-active employers using Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter emergency medicine roles by employers with active TN visa sponsorship history, so you spend time pursuing positions where the hiring team already understands the physician TN process.
Clarify shift structure to match TN specialty occupation requirements
TN physician status requires the role to be a bona fide specialty occupation. Locum tenens or per-diem-only arrangements sometimes draw extra scrutiny, so confirm your offer letter describes a defined clinical role with clear duties.
Prepare a credential packet before your first employer interview
Assemble your medical degree, transcripts, ECFMG certificate, board certification, state license, and any residency completion letters into one organized packet so employers can confirm TN eligibility quickly during recruitment.
Physician - Emergency Medicine TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Physician - Emergency Medicine role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes. Emergency medicine physicians qualify under the TN physician category established by USMCA. The role must involve direct patient care in a specialty occupation. Purely administrative or research-only physician roles may not qualify without a clinical component, so your offer letter should explicitly describe emergency department duties.
How does TN visa sponsorship for emergency medicine compare to H-1B?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, making it far more predictable than H-1B. Canadian physicians can receive TN status at the border on the day of travel. Mexican physicians apply through a U.S. consulate. H-1B requires a lottery selection that many qualified physicians never clear, causing delays of a year or more.
Where can I find emergency medicine jobs that actively sponsor TN visas?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals seeking TN visa sponsorship. You can search Physician - Emergency Medicine roles filtered to employers with documented TN sponsorship experience, which removes the friction of approaching hospitals unfamiliar with the physician TN process.
Can I work locum tenens shifts on a TN visa as an emergency medicine physician?
Locum tenens arrangements are possible under TN status but require careful structuring. The arrangement must reflect a genuine employer-employee or qualified contracting relationship with a defined scope of clinical duties. Staffing agency placements can complicate the employer-of-record question, so confirm with your employer how the petition will be filed before accepting a locum offer.
What documents does my employer need to file my TN petition for an emergency medicine role?
Your employer will need your medical degree, ECFMG certificate if applicable, state medical license, board certification documentation, and a detailed support letter describing the specialty occupation duties. For Canadian citizens, you'll present your support letter directly at the U.S. port of entry—there's no advance government petition filing required. For Mexican citizens, your employer's support letter is submitted with your TN application at a U.S. consulate. The support letter is the key document establishing that your role qualifies as a specialty occupation in emergency medicine.
