Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Physical Therapy Assistant
Verify your PTA credentials before applying
Your associate degree must be from a CAPTE-accredited program. Employers and CBP officers will both scrutinize this. If your credential is from a Canadian institution, gather your transcript and licensure documents before your first interview.
Confirm state licensure aligns with the job location
PTAs must hold a state license to practice in the state where the job is located. Secure or apply for that state license before your TN visa filing, since CBP expects your documentation to reflect where you will actually work.
Target employers experienced with visa sponsorship
Health systems, outpatient rehabilitation chains, and hospital networks regularly sponsor work visas. Use Migrate Mate to find PTA roles at employers with recent visa filings, so you avoid spending weeks on employers unfamiliar with visa sponsorship processes.
Ask for an employer support letter at the offer stage
The TN process requires a detailed employer letter describing your role, your qualifying credentials, and the duration of employment. Request this letter from HR before your port of entry appointment so there are no last-minute delays.
Understand how Mexican TN holders enter status differently
Mexican citizens cannot self-petition at the port of entry like Canadians can. You must apply for a TN visa at a U.S. consulate in Mexico before traveling. Build consular appointment wait times into your start date negotiation with the employer.
Track your TN period against your state license renewal
TN status is typically granted for up to three years. If your state PTA license expires before your TN period ends, you will need to renew the license and update your employer documentation before your next USCIS or CBP interaction.
Physical Therapy Assistant TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Physical Therapy Assistant role qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes. PTAs qualify under the Physical Therapist category in the USMCA TN occupational list. You must hold an associate degree from a CAPTE-accredited PTA program and a current state license in the state where you will work. Both Canadian and Mexican citizens are eligible, though the application process differs by nationality.
How is the TN visa different from the H-1B for PTA roles?
The TN visa has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, so you can apply any time of year and receive a decision the same day at a port of entry. The H-1B visa has an annual cap of 65,000 and requires a lottery before you can file. For PTAs, TN is nearly always the faster and more predictable route.
What documents does a Canadian PTA need at the port of entry?
You need your Canadian passport, a signed employer support letter describing the PTA role and your qualifications, your CAPTE-accredited transcript or diploma, proof of your state PTA license, and your TN fee payment. CBP officers adjudicate TN applications on the spot, so incomplete documentation can result in denial and delay your start date.
How can I find PTA employers who are open to TN visa sponsorship?
Many PTA employers are unfamiliar with the TN process, which makes targeting the right employers early essential. Migrate Mate lets you search Physical Therapy Assistant jobs specifically filtered for TN visa sponsorship, so you can focus your applications on employers who have already committed to supporting the process.
Can a Mexican PTA apply for TN status at the border like a Canadian?
No. Mexican citizens must apply for a TN visa stamp at a U.S. consulate in Mexico rather than at a port of entry. You will need the same employer letter and credentialing documents, but the consular appointment process adds several weeks to your timeline. Factor this into your negotiated start date with any employer.
