Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Dental Assistant
Verify your credential before applying
TN visa classification for Dental Assistants requires proof of a recognized dental assisting credential. Confirm your provincial or national certification translates clearly to a U.S.-recognized credential before submitting any application.
Target dental practices with existing TN history
Multi-location dental groups and DSO-affiliated practices file TN petitions more often than solo practitioners. Prioritize employers who have sponsored international clinical staff before, as they understand the documentation requirements.
Request a support letter before the border
Canadian professionals applying at a port of entry need a detailed employer support letter outlining the role, credential requirement, and USMCA eligibility. A weak or vague letter is the most common reason CBP officers request additional documentation.
Understand the Mexican consular appointment timeline
Mexican citizens must schedule a consular interview, which adds several weeks to the process. Build that lead time into your start date negotiation so your employer doesn't withdraw the offer due to delays.
Use Migrate Mate to find dental employers offering sponsorship
Search Migrate Mate to identify dental practices actively offering TN visa sponsorship for Dental Assistants. Filtering by sponsorship history saves time you'd otherwise spend cold-contacting employers unfamiliar with the TN process.
Clarify scope of practice before your offer letter
State dental boards define what Dental Assistants can and cannot do, and some expanded-function duties require additional state certification. Confirm your authorized scope matches the job description before the offer is finalized to avoid credential mismatches at the border.
Dental Assistant TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Dental Assistant role actually qualify for a TN visa?
Yes, Dental Assistant is a listed TN visa occupation under USMCA when the position genuinely requires a dental assisting credential. The employer must document that the role requires that specific qualification. Positions where a credential is preferred but not required typically do not meet the specialty occupation threshold CBP applies during TN adjudication.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Dental Assistants?
TN visa is significantly more accessible for this role. H-1B visa requires a U.S. bachelor's degree equivalent and is subject to an annual lottery that most Dental Assistants would not clear. TN has no lottery, no annual cap for Canadians, and Canadians can receive approval at the port of entry the same day. Mexican nationals face a separate allocation but still avoid the H-1B lottery entirely.
What documents does my employer need to prepare for my TN application?
Your employer needs to provide a detailed support letter on company letterhead that specifies your job title, duties, the credential required, your start date, and confirmation that you are a Canadian or Mexican citizen. For Canadian applicants going through CBP at the border, this letter plus your credential documentation is the core of the application package.
How do I find dental employers who sponsor TN visas?
Most dental practices do not advertise TN sponsorship directly in job postings. Migrate Mate is built specifically to surface employers offering TN visa sponsorship for Dental Assistant roles, so you can focus on practices that are already open to the process rather than educating employers from scratch.
Can I switch dental employers after receiving TN status?
Yes, but your TN authorization is tied to your current employer. If you change employers, you need a new TN approval reflecting the new practice before you start working there. Canadian citizens can apply at a port of entry again with the new employer's support letter. Mexican citizens need to return through consular processing, which takes additional lead time.
