Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Registered Nurse
Verify your credentials meet TN standards
TN visa classification for Registered Nurses requires a baccalaureate degree in nursing. If you hold a three-year Canadian BScN or a Mexican licenciatura, confirm your transcript shows degree equivalency before contacting any U.S. employer about sponsorship.
Get your NCLEX licensure before applying
U.S. employers will not initiate TN paperwork until you hold a valid state nursing license. Pass the NCLEX and secure licensure in your target state first so sponsorship conversations can move to an offer immediately.
Target health systems with recent visa sponsorship experience
Large hospital networks and regional health systems frequently support TN nurses because their legal and HR teams are experienced with visa sponsorship generally. Search for employers with recent visa filings in nursing roles—these organizations are far more likely to write the employer support letter required for your TN application rather than turning you away cold.
Use Migrate Mate to find TN-sponsoring nursing employers
Search Migrate Mate to filter Registered Nurse openings by employers with recent visa filing activity. This cuts out the guesswork of cold-calling HR departments to ask whether they have experience sponsoring international nursing staff.
Clarify the TN support scope before signing your offer
Ask during negotiations whether the employer covers attorney fees and government filing costs or deducts them from your paycheck. Some health systems cover all costs; others pass fees to the employee. Get the answer in writing before you accept.
Understand the port-of-entry process if you are Canadian
Canadian RNs do not need to file with USCIS in advance. You present your offer letter, nursing license, and degree documents directly to CBP at the border. Having a complete, organized packet reduces the chance of secondary inspection causing delays.
Registered Nurse TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Registered Nurse role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes. Registered Nurses are explicitly listed as a qualifying TN occupation under USMCA. To qualify, your role must require a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree in nursing, and you must hold a valid U.S. state nursing license. Diploma-prepared nurses or those without NCLEX licensure do not meet the TN standard for this occupation.
How does TN visa sponsorship for nurses compare to H-1B?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, so you can start working as soon as your sponsorship paperwork clears rather than waiting for a lottery result. H-1B visa subjects most applicants to a random selection process with an annual April deadline. For Mexican nationals, TN has a limited allocation, which can create delays similar to H-1B cap pressure.
Where can I find Registered Nurse jobs with TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate filters nursing roles specifically by TN sponsorship availability, so you can avoid spending time on employers who don't file for international nurses. Standard job boards list openings without confirming whether the employer will support TN status, which wastes significant time in phone screens and early interviews.
Does my employer need to file anything with USCIS for my TN as a Canadian nurse?
No USCIS filing is required for Canadian TN applicants. Your employer prepares a support letter confirming your nursing role, your qualifications, and the employment terms. You present that letter along with your nursing license and degree credentials to a CBP officer at the port of entry. Approval happens on the spot if documentation is complete.
Can a Mexican Registered Nurse get TN sponsorship the same way as a Canadian?
The process differs meaningfully. Mexican TN applicants must apply through a U.S. consulate in Mexico rather than at the border. The annual TN allocation for Mexican nationals is limited, and wait times at consulates vary by location and season. Your employer must still provide a detailed offer letter confirming the nursing role requires a licenciatura-level degree.
