Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as an Oncology Specialist
Verify your credentials meet TN standards
TN visa classification for oncology roles requires a medical degree recognized in the U.S. Have your foreign credentials evaluated by a NACES-accredited body before applying. Gaps between your home country's degree nomenclature and U.S. equivalents can delay sponsorship.
Target cancer centers with visa sponsorship experience
Academic medical centers and NCI-designated cancer centers have experience sponsoring work visas for specialist physicians. These employers already understand visa sponsorship requirements and timelines, making the process faster and more predictable for you. For Canadian applicants, your employer writes a support letter that you present directly at a U.S. port of entry. For Mexican applicants, your employer provides a support letter that accompanies your application at a U.S. consulate.
Distinguish your oncology subspecialty in applications
Radiation, medical, and surgical oncology map to different occupational classifications that USCIS reviews during TN adjudication. Clarifying your subspecialty upfront ensures your role aligns with the correct TN category, which prevents delays when you present your case at the port of entry or consulate.
Search TN-ready oncology roles through Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter oncology positions by employers with recent visa filing experience. This removes the guesswork of identifying which cancer programs are genuinely prepared to sponsor work visas and have demonstrated experience with international hiring processes.
Request the employer support letter before your border crossing
Canadian professionals entering at a port of entry need a detailed employer support letter confirming your oncology role, degree requirement, and TN classification. Without it, CBP officers cannot adjudicate your TN on the spot, even with all other documents in hand.
Prepare for consulate-specific documentation requirements if Mexican
Mexican nationals applying at U.S. consulates face additional document review beyond the support letter, including DS-160 completion and appointment scheduling. Build at least six to eight weeks into your timeline before your intended U.S. start date.
Oncology Specialist TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Oncology Specialist role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes. Oncology Specialists qualify under the TN visa's physician category, provided the role requires a medical degree and involves direct patient care or clinical research. The position must meet the specialty occupation standard, and your employer must document why the role requires your specific oncology training and credentials.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for oncology professionals?
TN sponsorship is available year-round with no lottery and no annual cap for Canadians. H-1B visa slots are limited to 85,000 per fiscal year and require registration in a random lottery each spring. For oncology specialists who are Canadian or Mexican citizens, TN is a more reliable pathway that doesn't depend on lottery selection.
What documentation does my employer need to provide for TN sponsorship?
Your employer must prepare a support letter confirming the oncology role, the specific duties, the degree required, your qualifications, and the TN classification being requested. Canadian applicants present this support letter directly at the port of entry. For Mexican applicants, the support letter is submitted as part of the consular application process. No prevailing wage determination or government labor certification is required for TN status.
How can I find oncology employers who are prepared to sponsor TN visas?
Migrate Mate lets you search oncology roles specifically filtered by employers with recent visa filings, which means you're applying to companies experienced with the sponsorship process. This is more efficient than applying broadly and discovering after an offer that the employer isn't familiar with work visa requirements.
Can I switch oncology employers while on TN status?
Yes, but you cannot work for the new employer until a new TN is approved. Canadian citizens can apply at the port of entry for a new TN with documentation from the incoming employer. Mexican nationals must schedule a new consulate appointment. There is no portability provision under TN the way there is under H-1B.
