Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as an Internal Medicine Physician
Verify your credentials meet TN standards
TN visa eligibility for physicians requires a full M.D. or D.O. from a recognized institution. A residency certificate or ECFMG certification alone won't satisfy the requirement. Confirm your degree documentation is complete before approaching employers.
Target hospital systems with immigration infrastructure
Large academic medical centers and multi-hospital health systems routinely file TN petitions for internists. Prioritize employers who already credentialing international physicians, since they understand state medical licensing timelines alongside TN filing.
Get state licensure moving before the offer stage
Most U.S. states require a full medical license before you can practice, and licensing can take three to six months. Start the application in your target state as soon as possible so it doesn't delay your start date after TN approval.
Clarify the support letter scope with your employer
The TN support letter must specify your title as Internal Medicine Physician, your duties, your qualifications, and the employment terms. A vague letter citing only 'physician services' has caused CBP delays. Ask HR or legal to confirm the letter matches your actual scope of practice.
Search TN-specific job listings through Migrate Mate
Generic job boards don't filter by visa sponsorship type. Migrate Mate surfaces Internal Medicine Physician roles where employers have confirmed TN visa sponsorship, saving you from pursuing positions that require H-1B visa or citizenship only.
Understand the Mexican TN cap and plan consular timing
Mexican citizens applying for TN status are subject to an annual cap. If you're a Mexican physician, apply early in the fiscal year and book your consular appointment at Ciudad Juárez or another U.S. consulate as soon as your employer's support letter is finalized.
Internal Medicine Physician TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Internal Medicine Physician qualify for TN visa status?
Yes. Physicians are explicitly listed as a qualifying profession under the USMCA TN category. To qualify, you must hold an M.D. or equivalent degree from a recognized institution, have a job offer from a U.S. employer for physician services, and meet any applicable state licensing requirements for the position.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for internal medicine physicians?
TN has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadian citizens, and no lengthy USCIS adjudication queue for most applicants. Canadians can receive TN status at the port of entry on the same day. H-1B requires an employer petition, a lottery selection, and months of processing. For physicians with a qualifying offer, TN is substantially faster to activate.
Do I need a state medical license before my employer can file a TN petition?
Not always before filing, but you typically need a full license before you can begin clinical practice. Some states issue a temporary or training license that satisfies CBP for initial TN approval, while others require full licensure. Confirm your target state's requirements with your employer's HR or immigration contact before committing to a start date.
How can I find Internal Medicine Physician jobs with confirmed TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate filters physician job listings specifically by TN visa sponsorship availability, so you're not cold-applying to roles that require H-1B or permanent residency. Searching there significantly narrows your list to employers who have already confirmed they'll support a TN petition for this role.
Can a Mexican citizen apply for TN status as an internal medicine physician, and are there restrictions?
Yes, Mexican citizens qualify under USMCA, but they must apply at a U.S. consulate rather than at the border. Mexican TN applicants are also subject to an annual numerical cap, unlike Canadian citizens. Applying early in the fiscal year and having your employer's support letter ready before booking your consular appointment reduces the risk of delays from cap exhaustion.
