Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Family Practitioner
Verify your medical license transfers correctly
A Canadian or Mexican medical degree alone isn't sufficient. You'll need a valid U.S. state medical license or proof of eligibility for one before most family practice employers will proceed with TN sponsorship paperwork.
Target federally qualified health centers first
FQHCs and rural health clinics have strong incentives to sponsor international physicians and are familiar with TN documentation requirements. They often have faster internal approval processes than large hospital systems.
Get your ECFMG certification in order early
International medical graduates need ECFMG certification before practicing in the U.S. Confirm your certification status is current and matches your legal name exactly, since discrepancies delay employer verification and TN filing.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring employers
Searching for Family Practitioner roles with confirmed TN visa sponsorship history narrows your options fast. Migrate Mate filters employers by visa sponsorship activity so you aren't cold-applying to practices unfamiliar with the process.
Ask employers about support letter specifics upfront
TN approval at the border or consulate depends heavily on the employer's support letter. Confirm the employer will specify your title as 'Family Practitioner,' your qualifying degree, and your intended duties before you accept an offer.
Plan around consulate timelines if you hold Mexican citizenship
Mexican nationals apply for TN status through a U.S. consulate, not at a port of entry. Schedule your consulate appointment immediately after receiving your offer letter since appointment availability in Mexico City varies by several weeks.

Find Family Practitioner JobsFamily Practitioner TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Family Practitioner role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes. Family Practitioner is a recognized TN visa occupation under USMCA. To qualify, you must hold a degree in medicine from a recognized institution, possess a valid license or proof of eligibility for licensure in the state where you'll practice, and have a job offer from a U.S. employer specifying you in that role.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for family physicians?
TN is significantly more practical for Canadian and Mexican family physicians. There's no lottery, no annual cap for Canadians, and no lengthy USCIS petition process. H-1B requires employer sponsorship months in advance and depends on a random lottery selection. TN can be approved at the border or consulate within days of receiving your offer letter.
Where can I find Family Practitioner jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. It surfaces employers with active TN visa sponsorship history so you can apply to practices and health systems already familiar with the process, rather than spending time educating employers on what TN sponsorship involves.
What documents does my employer need to provide for my TN application?
Your employer must provide a support letter on company letterhead that includes your job title as 'Family Practitioner,' a description of your duties, your anticipated length of employment, your qualifications, and your professional credentials. Canadian citizens present this letter directly at a U.S. port of entry. Mexican nationals submit it as part of their consulate application package.
Can I switch employers after receiving TN status as a Family Practitioner?
You can change employers, but your TN status is tied to your current sponsoring employer. To switch, you'll need a new TN authorization before starting with the new employer. Canadian physicians can obtain this at a port of entry with a new support letter. Mexican nationals must return to a U.S. consulate for a new TN visa.
