Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Thoracic Surgeon
Verify your credentials match TN requirements
TN classification for surgeons requires a qualifying medical degree and valid licensure. Confirm your Canadian or Mexican medical diploma and any residency documentation are translated, notarized, and consistent with the state licensing board's requirements before applying.
Target academic medical centers and trauma systems
Large hospital networks and academic health systems with thoracic surgery programs file TN sponsorship paperwork regularly. Prioritize institutions with established credentialing teams who understand USMCA professional category filings for surgical specialists.
Use Migrate Mate to find TN-sponsoring thoracic roles
Searching broadly misses employers actively filing for surgical specialists. Migrate Mate filters for thoracic surgeon openings with confirmed TN visa sponsorship, so you're targeting roles where the employer already understands the filing process.
Clarify state licensure timing with your employer
TN approval doesn't guarantee you can practice immediately. Some states require full licensure before you can begin clinical work, while others accept a temporary permit. Negotiate a start date that gives you enough time to clear the state medical board.
Request a detailed offer letter covering TN requirements
CBP and USCIS require the offer letter to specify your title, duties, salary, and employment duration. A vague letter causes delays or denials. Ask your employer's HR team to confirm the letter explicitly names the thoracic surgeon role and its surgical scope.
Understand Mexican TN allocation before accepting an offer
Mexico's TN allocation is capped annually, unlike Canada's. If you hold Mexican citizenship, confirm your prospective employer has confirmed TN availability for the current fiscal year and has filed USCIS petitions before, not just Canadian-route border entries.

Find Thoracic Surgeon JobsThoracic Surgeon TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does thoracic surgery qualify as a TN visa occupation?
Yes. Thoracic surgeons qualify under the physician and surgeon category in the USMCA's TN professional list. You'll need a qualifying medical degree from a recognized institution, a valid job offer from a U.S. employer, and, depending on the state, an active or pending medical license before beginning clinical practice.
How does TN compare to H-1B for thoracic surgeons?
TN has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadian citizens, and can often be obtained at the border or port of entry within hours. H-1B requires a petition filed months in advance and subjects you to random selection. For thoracic surgeons with Canadian citizenship, TN is substantially faster and more predictable than the H-1B route.
Where can I find thoracic surgeon jobs with TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for professionals seeking TN visa sponsorship in the U.S. You can search for thoracic surgeon roles where employers have indicated TN eligibility, which removes the friction of applying to positions where sponsorship is uncertain or where HR teams are unfamiliar with the USMCA physician category.
Can I switch hospitals while on a TN visa as a thoracic surgeon?
Yes, but you can't begin work at a new employer until a new TN authorization is approved. Canadians can apply at a port of entry with a new offer letter, often getting same-day approval. Mexicans must file a new USCIS petition. Plan the timing carefully to avoid a gap between positions.
Does my Canadian or Mexican medical board certification satisfy U.S. credentialing requirements for TN sponsorship?
TN classification itself doesn't require U.S. board certification, but most U.S. hospital systems and state licensing boards do. Canadian Royal College fellowship credentials are generally recognized, while Mexican physicians often need ECFMG certification and a U.S. residency completion to satisfy hospital credentialing and state licensure requirements independently of TN status.
