Frame your credentials around ERISA compliance work
TN approval for this role depends on demonstrating specialty occupation work. Highlight plan design, Form 5500 preparation, and fiduciary compliance in your resume and offer letter rather than generic wealth management or client servicing duties.
Target plan sponsors over retail financial firms
Corporate benefits departments, third-party administrators, and actuarial consulting firms file TN paperwork far more routinely than retail brokerage houses. Focus your search on employers whose core business includes qualified plan administration and ERISA reporting.
Search for TN-sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters job listings by TN visa sponsorship history, so you can identify Retirement Plan Consultant openings with employers already familiar with the USMCA process rather than educating hiring managers from scratch.
Request an offer letter that specifies plan-consulting duties
CBP officers adjudicate TN status at the port of entry for Canadians. An offer letter listing vague duties like 'financial services' creates unnecessary risk. Ensure it details qualified plan design, compliance reviews, or actuarial support explicitly.
Confirm your degree field aligns with the Accountant TN category
The Accountant category requires a baccalaureate or licenciatura in accounting or a directly related field. A finance or economics degree may require additional documentation showing equivalency to accounting coursework before your employer files.
Understand Mexican nationals must schedule a consular appointment
Unlike Canadians who present TN documentation at the border, Mexican nationals apply for a TN visa at a U.S. consulate and are subject to a annual numerical limit. Factor consulate wait times into your start-date negotiations with the employer.

Find Retirement Plan Consultant JobsRetirement Plan Consultant TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Retirement Plan Consultant work qualify under a TN visa category?
Yes, but the qualification hinges on how your duties are framed. The role typically falls under the Accountant TN category, which requires a baccalaureate or licenciatura in accounting or a closely related field. Work focused on ERISA compliance, plan design, and Form 5500 filings supports qualification more clearly than general investment advisory work.
How does TN visa sponsorship for this role compare to H-1B?
TN has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadian citizens, and can be approved at the port of entry the same day for Canadians. H-1B requires employer petitioning, a March lottery, and several months of USCIS processing. For Retirement Plan Consultants with Canadian or Mexican citizenship and a qualifying degree, TN is a faster and more predictable path to U.S. employment.
What documents does the employer need to provide for TN sponsorship?
The employer must provide a detailed offer letter on company letterhead specifying your job title, duties, qualifications required, and the temporary nature of the position. For Canadian applicants processed at the border, no prior USCIS filing is needed. Mexican nationals require the employer to support a DS-160 and consular interview process instead.
Where can I find Retirement Plan Consultant jobs with TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals seeking U.S. roles with TN visa sponsorship. You can filter listings by visa type to find Retirement Plan Consultant openings with employers who already understand the TN process, which reduces delays during offer negotiations.
Can a TN visa be extended if I stay with the same employer long-term?
Yes. TN status is granted in three-year increments and can be renewed indefinitely as long as you maintain a qualifying job offer and your employer supports each renewal. There is no maximum duration on TN status, making it a viable long-term arrangement for Retirement Plan Consultants in ongoing plan administration or compliance roles.
