Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Staff Accountant
Verify your degree meets TN standards
TN visa classification for accountants requires a bachelor's degree in accounting or a closely related field. A general business degree without an accounting concentration often triggers employer hesitation or a CBP denial at the port of entry.
Target employers with recent visa sponsorship experience
Accounting firms and public companies with recent visa filings are already experienced with visa sponsorship processes. Prioritizing these employers can streamline discussions, since they're familiar with work authorization documentation and visa requirements. For TN sponsorship, this means they understand the support letter requirement and can efficiently prepare the documentation you'll need to present at a U.S. port of entry or consulate.
Get your CPA credential situation clarified early
You don't need a CPA license to qualify for TN status as a Staff Accountant, but some employers assume you do. Clarify this before the offer stage so licensing requirements don't derail an otherwise qualifying role.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring employers
Searching broadly wastes time when most postings don't address TN sponsorship at all. Migrate Mate filters roles by TN visa sponsorship so Canadian and Mexican accountants can focus on employers already open to hiring them.
Prepare a TN support letter before you need it
Your employer's TN support letter must describe the role in terms of the USMCA Accountant category, not just copy the job description. Draft a template with your hiring manager before the offer is finalized so nothing delays your start date.
Understand the Mexican TN cap before you apply
Mexican citizens face an annual cap of 5,500 TN visas, unlike Canadians who have no numerical limit. If you're Mexican and starting a job search late in the fiscal year, timing your offer and filing to avoid cap exhaustion matters.
Staff Accountant TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Staff Accountant role qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes, provided the position meets the USMCA Accountant category requirements. The role must require a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field, and your employer must be able to document that the work is professional in nature. General bookkeeping or clerical accounting roles typically do not qualify, but Staff Accountant positions at public and private companies usually do.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for Staff Accountant jobs?
TN is significantly more accessible for Canadian and Mexican accountants. There's no annual lottery, no cap for Canadian citizens, and your employer can file at a U.S. port of entry or through USCIS without waiting months for a selection result. H-1B visa requires winning a lottery with roughly a 25% selection rate, making TN the faster and more predictable path for qualifying applicants.
Where can I find Staff Accountant jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Most job postings don't specify TN sponsorship, so filtering by visa type saves significant time. Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search, letting Canadian and Mexican professionals find accounting roles where employers have already indicated willingness to sponsor TN status, rather than discovering that barrier after multiple interview rounds.
Do I need a CPA license to get TN visa sponsorship as a Staff Accountant?
No. The USMCA Accountant category does not require a CPA license, only a qualifying bachelor's degree in accounting or a closely related field. Some employers may list CPA licensure as preferred or required for their own hiring standards, but it is not a TN eligibility requirement. Clarify your employer's expectations during the interview process rather than assuming the visa requires it.
Can my employer sponsor my TN visa at the U.S. border instead of filing with USCIS?
Yes, and for Canadian citizens this is often the fastest route. Canadian accountants can present TN documentation at a U.S. land border or preclearance location and receive TN status on the spot if CBP approves the application. Mexican nationals must apply at a U.S. consulate abroad and cannot use the port-of-entry process. Both paths require a complete employer support letter and credential documents.
