Confirm your CPA credential maps correctly
TN visa classification for tax professionals requires meeting the accountant category, which CBP ties to a recognized accounting credential. Canadian CPAs and Mexican CPAs with state-equivalent licensure satisfy this, but a CPA in progress does not.
Target employers with dedicated tax practices
Public accounting firms and large corporate tax departments file TN letters routinely. Prioritize employers whose tax function is large enough to have a dedicated senior manager headcount, as smaller firms may lack the internal HR infrastructure to support TN documentation.
Request a role-specific TN support letter early
Ask the hiring team to draft your TN support letter before you give notice at your current job. The letter must tie your CPA credential and senior manager duties to the USMCA accountant category explicitly, not just restate your job title.
Search TN-eligible roles at employers with visa experience
Use Migrate Mate to filter Tax Senior Manager openings by employers experienced with visa sponsorship, so you're not discovering a firm's immigration policy during the final offer stage.
Understand how Mexican citizens handle consular processing
Unlike Canadian citizens who can obtain TN status at a port of entry, Mexican citizens must schedule a consular interview and obtain their TN visa stamp before entering the U.S. to work. Build four to eight weeks of consulate processing time into your start date negotiation.
Prepare for CBP questions on specialty occupation scope
CBP officers at the port of entry may question whether senior manager duties, including people management and business development, still qualify under the accountant category. Bring documentation showing that substantive tax advisory and compliance work remains the core function of the role.
Tax Senior Manager TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Tax Senior Manager role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, provided the role is grounded in substantive tax advisory, compliance, or planning work that maps to the USMCA accountant category. CBP evaluates the actual duties, not just the title. Roles where management or business development dominates can face scrutiny, so your employer's support letter should document that tax work is the primary function.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Tax Senior Manager positions?
TN is faster and more predictable for this role. There's no lottery, no annual cap for Canadian citizens, and approval can happen the same day at a port of entry. H-1B visa selection is random and limited to 85,000 slots annually. For Canadian CPAs with a qualifying offer, TN is the more direct path. Mexican citizens face a separate TN allocation but still avoid the H-1B lottery entirely.
What documents does a Tax Senior Manager need for TN processing?
You'll need a TN support letter from your employer that describes your duties, qualifications, and the USMCA category being claimed, plus proof of your CPA credential or equivalent accounting degree. Canadian citizens present these at the port of entry. Mexican citizens submit them as part of a DS-160 and consular appointment package. Bring transcripts and license documentation in addition to the support letter.
Where can I find Tax Senior Manager jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. You can filter Tax Senior Manager openings by TN sponsorship availability, so you're targeting employers who are already set up to handle TN filings rather than educating every recruiter from scratch. This is especially useful for identifying which public accounting firms and corporate tax departments actively support TN candidates.
Can a Tax Senior Manager on TN status change employers?
Yes, but TN status is employer-specific. When you move to a new firm, your new employer must issue a fresh TN support letter and you must obtain new TN authorization before your first day. Canadian citizens can do this at the border. Mexican citizens need a new visa stamp. There's no formal transfer process, so timing your start date around the new TN approval is essential.
