Document your CPA credential equivalency early
TN classification for tax consultants requires proof of a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field. If your Canadian CPA designation was earned through a non-accounting undergraduate degree, prepare a credential evaluation before outreach begins.
Target firms with dedicated international tax practices
National accounting firms and large regional practices that handle cross-border tax work already understand TN eligibility for accountants. Their HR and legal teams won't need educating on whether the role qualifies under USMCA.
Clarify your role title before the offer letter is drafted
TN approval depends on the job title and duties matching an approved USMCA category. If your employer uses an internal title like Senior Tax Specialist, ask them to map it explicitly to Accountant in your offer letter to avoid CBP confusion.
Use Migrate Mate to find employers experienced with visa sponsorship
Search Migrate Mate to identify tax and accounting employers with recent visa filings who are experienced with work visa sponsorship. Focusing your applications there cuts time spent educating employers unfamiliar with the TN visa process.
Prepare for same-day Canadian border entry with a complete package
Canadian citizens can receive TN approval at a port of entry without a prior visa appointment. Arrive with your signed offer letter, degree transcripts, CPA credential documentation, and a clear description of your tax duties to avoid secondary inspection delays.
Understand that Mexican nationals follow a consular route with longer timelines
Mexican tax professionals must apply for a TN visa at a U.S. consulate rather than at the border. Factor in consulate scheduling wait times when negotiating your start date with a prospective employer.

Find Tax Consultant JobsTax Consultant TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Tax Consultant role qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes, tax consulting falls under the Accountant category in the USMCA TN visa schedule. Your job duties must center on accounting, tax planning, or tax compliance work, and you must hold a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field. Roles that are primarily sales or client relationship management without substantive tax advisory work may not qualify.
How does the TN visa compare to the H-1B for Tax Consultant roles?
The TN visa has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, meaning you can start as soon as you have a job offer and the right credentials. The H-1B requires entering a lottery that accepts fewer than one in three registrations in recent years. For tax consultants who are Canadian or Mexican citizens, the TN is a faster and more predictable path to U.S. employment.
Where can I find Tax Consultant jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals seeking roles with TN visa sponsorship. Searching there lets you filter for tax and accounting positions at employers who already understand the TN process, rather than spending time on applications where sponsorship is uncertain or where the hiring team has never filed a TN before.
Can I switch tax employers while on a TN visa?
Yes, but your TN authorization is tied to your current employer. Before you can start with a new firm, either your new employer files a TN change-of-employer petition with USCIS, or you apply for a new TN at a port of entry or consulate with updated documentation from the new employer. Working for the new firm before that approval is in place puts your status at risk.
Does my employer need to file anything with USCIS to sponsor my TN visa?
For Canadian citizens entering at the border, no prior USCIS filing is required. Your employer prepares the offer letter and supporting documentation, and CBP adjudicates the TN on the spot. For Mexican citizens, a consular application is required, but USCIS is not involved in that process either. An employer can also file Form I-129 with USCIS to petition for TN status if you're already in the U.S. and need to change or extend status.
