Verify your credential matches USMCA categories
Insurance roles qualify under Accountant or Economist categories depending on your function. Actuaries with a bachelor's in mathematics or statistics fit most cleanly. Underwriters and claims managers often need supporting documentation tying their degree to the offered role.
Target carriers with cross-border hiring history
Large commercial insurers and reinsurance firms regularly hire Canadian professionals and understand TN visa requirements. Prioritize employers whose U.S. operations already include Canadian or Mexican staff, since their HR teams won't need to learn TN mechanics from scratch.
Get your offer letter written for TN compliance
Your employer's offer letter must specify your professional category, the proffered position, and that employment is temporary. A vague letter describing general duties is a common reason CBP officers ask follow-up questions at the Canadian border.
Use Migrate Mate to find employers with TN sponsorship
Search Migrate Mate to identify insurance employers actively offering TN visa sponsorship. Filtering by role type and location shows you which carriers and brokerages have already structured offers for Canadian and Mexican professionals, saving time on cold outreach.
Prepare for TN documentation and port of entry questions
Unlike H-1B visa, TN doesn't require a formal application with a government agency, but you'll still want to scrutinize your offer carefully. Researching typical market salaries for your insurance specialty helps you evaluate whether an offer is competitive and signals that the employer understands how to structure a legitimate TN arrangement.
Plan Mexican consular processing timelines carefully
Mexican citizens must apply at a U.S. consulate rather than at the border. Schedule your consular appointment well before your intended start date, since appointment availability in Mexico City and Monterrey varies significantly and can run several weeks out.
Insurance TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which insurance roles qualify for a TN visa?
Actuaries, underwriters, claims adjusters, and risk analysts can qualify for TN status when their role requires a bachelor's degree in a related field such as mathematics, statistics, economics, or finance. The position must fit within a recognized USMCA professional category, and your degree must have a direct relationship to the duties you'll perform.
How does TN compare to H-1B for insurance professionals?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, making it far more predictable than H-1B, which limits approvals to 85,000 per year through a random selection process. TN processing for Canadians happens at the border, often on the same day. The tradeoff is that TN doesn't lead directly to permanent residence the way H-1B can.
Does my employer need to file anything with USCIS for my TN visa?
Canadian citizens don't require employer-filed petitions. You present your offer letter and credentials directly to a CBP officer at the border, and CBP adjudicates TN status on the spot. Mexican citizens do require a formal I-129 petition filed with USCIS before applying at a U.S. consulate, so their employers have a more involved role in the process.
Where can I find insurance employers that sponsor TN visas?
Migrate Mate lets you search specifically for insurance roles with TN visa sponsorship, filtering by job type and location so you can identify carriers, brokerages, and reinsurers that have already structured compliant offers for Canadian and Mexican professionals. This saves time compared to screening employers individually for sponsorship willingness.
Can I switch insurance employers while on TN status?
Yes, but your TN status is tied to a specific employer and role. Canadians can apply for a new TN at the border with an offer letter from the new employer before leaving their current job, or after. Mexican citizens need their new employer to file a fresh I-129 petition. You cannot begin working for the new employer until the new TN is approved.
