Align your credentials with USMCA categories
Insurance Agent qualifies under the TN visa 'Economist' or 'Accountant' category only when your role involves financial analysis or risk assessment. Check that your degree field matches the specific job duties before applying, or you risk a CBSA or CBP denial.
Target employers with recent visa filing experience
Search Migrate Mate's database of employers with recent visa filings to identify insurance carriers and brokerages experienced with visa sponsorship. Firms already comfortable sponsoring work visas are far less likely to withdraw an offer when TN processing is involved.
Find TN-sponsoring employers through Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to search Insurance Agent roles filtered for TN visa sponsorship. The platform surfaces employers with verified sponsorship intent, cutting out the back-and-forth of asking HR whether they've sponsored TN professionals before.
Prepare a detailed support letter before your border appointment
Canadians present TN documentation directly at the port of entry. Your employer's support letter must specify your job title, duties, degree requirement, and employment start date. A vague letter is one of the most common causes of TN delays for this role.
Clarify licensing requirements with your prospective employer
U.S. states require insurance agents to hold a state license before selling policies. Confirm in writing whether the employer sponsors your TN petition before or after you obtain state licensure, since CBP may ask about your authorization to perform the role.
Request TN status for three years from the start
TN status can be issued in increments up to three years. Ask your employer to specify the full three-year period in the support letter rather than a shorter contract duration, reducing how often you need to renew and restart the documentation process.
Insurance Agent TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Insurance Agent role actually qualify for a TN visa?
It can, but the fit depends on your specific duties and degree. TN visa eligibility for insurance professionals is typically supported under categories like Economist or Management Consultant when the role involves financial analysis, risk modeling, or advisory functions. A general sales-focused insurance agent position without a degree requirement in a directly related field is harder to support at the port of entry or consulate.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for Insurance Agent positions?
TN is significantly more practical for Insurance Agent roles than H-1B visa. There is no annual lottery, no filing cap for Canadians, and no multi-month USCIS adjudication wait. Canadian citizens can receive TN status at a port of entry the same day a job offer is confirmed. H-1B visa requires lottery selection in April, USCIS petition approval, and an October start date, making it impractical for most hiring timelines in this field.
Where can I find Insurance Agent jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals seeking U.S. roles with visa sponsorship. You can search Insurance Agent positions filtered for TN sponsorship, which surfaces employers who have already indicated willingness to support the process rather than those who may decline after an offer is extended.
Do Mexican nationals follow the same TN process as Canadians for this role?
No. Mexican nationals must apply for a TN visa at a U.S. consulate in Mexico and receive a visa stamp before entering the United States in TN status. Canadians bypass consular processing entirely and present their documentation directly to CBP at a port of entry or preclearance location. Processing timelines and document requirements differ, though the underlying eligibility criteria for the Insurance Agent role are the same.
Can I hold a state insurance license while on TN status?
Yes. Holding a U.S. state insurance license is legally permitted on TN status and does not change your immigration classification. Most states allow non-U.S. citizens to obtain a license. Your TN status must already be valid when you begin performing licensed activities for compensation, so sequence your state licensing exam and your TN approval to avoid a gap in authorized employment.
