Verify your degree meets TN criteria
Your baccalaureate must be in education or the subject you'll teach. A general arts degree won't satisfy the Teacher category without a clear subject-matter connection. Check your transcripts before applying to districts.
Target districts with established substitute programs
Large urban and suburban school districts run centralized substitute pools and are more accustomed to employer-sponsored visa filings. Smaller rural districts often lack HR infrastructure to process TN sponsorship paperwork for substitute roles.
Ask about long-term substitute versus day-to-day status
Long-term substitute assignments are far easier to document as specialty occupation employment for TN purposes. Day-to-day on-call arrangements make it harder to establish the consistent professional relationship your sponsoring employer must certify.
Search TN-sponsored teaching jobs on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters Substitute Teacher roles by employers actively offering TN visa sponsorship, so you're not cold-applying to districts unfamiliar with the process. Use it to identify hiring managers already set up to file.
Confirm state teaching credential requirements upfront
Many states require substitute teachers to hold or be working toward a state credential. Confirm the specific state's requirements before your employer files, since USCIS expects the offered role to align with applicable professional standards.
Prepare your offer letter to reference TN classification
Your job offer letter must explicitly state the position qualifies under the TN Teacher category. Ask your HR contact to include your start date, wage, and that the role requires a baccalaureate in a relevant teaching field.

Find Substitute Teacher JobsSubstitute Teacher TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Substitute Teacher jobs qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes, substitute teaching falls under the USMCA Teacher category, which covers Canadian and Mexican professionals with a baccalaureate degree in education or a subject-matter teaching field. The role must be a genuine professional position, so long-term or extended substitute assignments are better suited to TN sponsorship than informal day-to-day call-out arrangements.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for substitute teachers?
The TN visa has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and can be obtained at a port of entry or consulate without waiting for a specific filing window. H-1B requires a lottery and is capped at 85,000 per year. For substitute teachers who are Canadian citizens, TN sponsorship is significantly faster and more predictable than the H-1B route.
What documents does a school district need to file TN sponsorship?
The sponsoring district typically prepares a support letter confirming your role, wage, and that the position requires a baccalaureate in a teaching field. You provide your degree credentials and passport. Canadian citizens present these at a U.S. port of entry for same-day adjudication. Mexican citizens apply at a U.S. consulate and receive a visa stamp before traveling.
Where can I find Substitute Teacher jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Most general job boards don't filter by visa sponsorship type, so you can waste significant time cold-applying to districts that have never processed a TN filing. Migrate Mate is built specifically for TN visa job seekers and surfaces Substitute Teacher roles from employers already prepared to sponsor, saving you from the awkward sponsorship conversation at first contact.
Can Mexican substitute teachers use the TN visa the same way Canadians can?
Mexican TN applicants follow a different process. Rather than applying at a port of entry, Mexican citizens must obtain a TN visa stamp at a U.S. consulate in Mexico before entering. There is also a numerical limit on TN visas for Mexican nationals. Processing timelines are longer, so Mexican professionals should confirm consulate appointment availability well before their intended start date.
