Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as an University Librarian
Verify your MLS degree meets requirements
TN eligibility for librarians requires a master's degree in library science. A general humanities or education master's won't qualify. Confirm your transcript uses terminology a U.S. consular officer or CBP agent will recognize as library science.
Target institutions with recent visa sponsorship experience
Large public university systems and research libraries have experience with visa sponsorship and typically have dedicated HR teams to handle the process. Smaller community colleges may lack experience sponsoring work visas, so contact their HR department directly before investing time in their application.
Request a support letter covering all TN elements
Your employer's support letter must state your job title as 'Librarian,' confirm your MLS degree requirement for the role, specify your employment dates, and describe duties tied to professional library work. Missing any element can cause a CBP denial at the port of entry.
Search TN-sponsored librarian roles through Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to find University Librarian positions at institutions already set up to sponsor TN visas. Filtering by sponsorship history saves time and connects you with employers who understand the filing requirements for academic library professionals.
Understand how Mexican national TN allocation affects timing
Mexican nationals face a limited annual TN allocation, unlike Canadians who receive TN status at the port of entry without a cap. Confirm with your prospective employer whether they've filed TN petitions for Mexican nationals before and what processing timeline to expect.
Align your offer letter job title with CBP's occupational list
CBP processes TN applications against a defined occupational list. Your offer letter and support documentation must list the title as 'Librarian,' not 'Information Specialist,' 'Knowledge Manager,' or similar alternatives, even if the institution uses different internal titling.

Find University Librarian JobsUniversity Librarian TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a University Librarian role qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes. Librarian is a listed TN occupational category under USMCA, and university librarian positions meet the definition when the role requires a master's degree in library science and involves professional library duties. Administrative or instructional technology roles housed in a library do not automatically qualify, even if titled similarly.
How does TN compare to H-1B for University Librarian positions?
TN is available year-round with no lottery, no annual cap for Canadians, and can be approved at the port of entry the same day. H-1B requires employer sponsorship through a randomized lottery with results in spring and a October start date. For most Canadian librarians, TN is a faster and more reliable path than entering the H-1B pool.
What documents do I need to bring to the port of entry for TN approval?
You'll need your valid Canadian or Mexican passport, a detailed employer support letter, proof of your master's degree in library science, and your offer letter or employment contract. CBP officers review these on the spot. Incomplete documentation is the most common reason for delays or same-day denials, so carry originals and clean copies.
Where can I find University Librarian jobs with TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically to connect Canadian and Mexican professionals with U.S. employers offering TN visa sponsorship. Searching there filters for institutions already familiar with TN requirements for professional library roles, which reduces back-and-forth with HR teams who haven't sponsored TN workers before.
Can I switch universities while on TN status as a librarian?
Yes, but your TN status is tied to your specific employer. Before starting at a new institution, that employer must issue a new support letter and you'll need to obtain a new TN authorization, either at a port of entry or through USCIS if you're already inside the U.S. You can't carry your existing TN status to a different university.
