Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Teaching Assistant
Match your degree to the posted role
TN eligibility for Teaching Assistants depends on your degree field aligning with the subject you'll be assisting in. A biology degree supports a TA role in life sciences. A general education degree may not satisfy a STEM department's requirements.
Request a formal support letter early
Ask your hiring institution for a TN support letter before your start date. It must state your job title, duties, degree requirement, and employment period. CBP officers at the port of entry use this letter to adjudicate your TN on the spot.
Target institutions with visa sponsorship experience
Universities and community colleges that regularly hire international faculty are more familiar with TN sponsorship processes than K-12 districts. Look for institutions with a history of visa sponsorship experience—employers who have sponsored work visas before are typically better equipped to provide the required support letter and guide you through the port of entry application process.
Clarify part-time versus full-time status upfront
TN status requires that employment be prearranged and professional in nature. A part-time TA contract can still qualify, but your support letter must specify hours and confirm the role meets the specialty occupation criteria your degree supports.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring employers fast
Filtering job postings by TN visa sponsorship willingness manually takes hours. Migrate Mate surfaces Teaching Assistant roles at employers already open to TN sponsorship, so you're applying where your status won't disqualify you from the first screen.
Prepare for Mexican nationals' consular documentation
Mexican citizens cannot self-petition at a port of entry and must attend a U.S. consular interview. Bring your offer letter, TN support letter, degree credentials, and proof of Canadian or Mexican citizenship. USCIS does not adjudicate TN petitions for Mexican nationals.

Find Teaching Assistant JobsTeaching Assistant TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Teaching Assistant role actually qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, Teaching Assistant positions qualify under the USMCA's Teacher category when the role requires a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree in the field being taught or assisted. The key is that the position must be tied to a specific academic discipline and your degree must match. A general TA role that accepts any major will face scrutiny at adjudication.
How does TN visa sponsorship for Teaching Assistants compare to H-1B?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, making it far more predictable than H-1B for qualifying TA roles. H-1B requires employer-filed petitions months in advance and selection is random. With TN, Canadian citizens can receive approval at the port of entry the same day, while Mexican nationals go through a consular process without a lottery wait.
Where can I find Teaching Assistant jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Most standard job boards don't filter by visa type, which means you spend time applying to roles where your status hasn't been considered. Migrate Mate is built specifically for TN and other visa-sponsored roles, letting you search Teaching Assistant positions at institutions already open to sponsoring international professionals under USMCA.
Can a graduate teaching assistantship at a U.S. university qualify for TN status?
Graduate assistantships can qualify if the institution treats the role as a formal employment position requiring a bachelor's degree in the relevant academic field. Unpaid or stipend-only arrangements where the primary relationship is as a student, not an employee, complicate the TN eligibility analysis. Confirm with the university's international office that they'll issue a formal TN support letter.
How long does TN status last for a Teaching Assistant, and can it be renewed?
Each TN approval covers up to three years and is tied to the specific employer and role described in your support letter. There's no limit on the number of renewals, so you can maintain TN status indefinitely as long as you remain in a qualifying position. Canadian citizens can renew at a port of entry or by mail through USCIS; Mexican nationals must return to a consulate.
