Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Professor
Assemble your academic credentials first
TN officers evaluate whether your degree directly supports the teaching role. Gather official transcripts, your diploma, and any foreign credential evaluations before applying. A letter confirming your teaching specialty strengthens the match.
Target institutions with established TN experience
Research and business schools at R1 universities process TN applications more frequently than small community colleges. Departments that regularly hire internationally are more likely to have HR teams who know the TN paperwork requirements without needing guidance from you.
Request a detailed employer support letter
Your offer letter alone isn't enough. Ask the hiring department for a separate support letter specifying your job title, duties, required degree field, and intended TN start date. CBP officers use this document to confirm the role meets the Professor classification.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring universities
Filtering for Professor roles at institutions with recent visa filings helps you identify employers experienced with work visa sponsorship. Migrate Mate surfaces academic positions where employers have demonstrated willingness to sponsor international talent, so you're focusing on organizations equipped to support your TN application process.
Understand the port-of-entry process as a Canadian
Canadian citizens apply for TN status directly at a U.S. land border or airport with your offer letter, credentials, and a completed I-129 support package. No prior USCIS petition is required, but CBP can request additional documentation if your degree field doesn't obviously match your teaching subject.
Clarify your department's funding source before accepting
Federally funded research positions may carry additional compliance requirements. Confirm with your hiring coordinator whether your role falls under a grant or contract, since this affects how your employer structures the TN support letter and any future extension filings.

Find Professor JobsProfessor TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Professor role automatically qualify for TN visa status?
Not automatically. The position must require teaching at an accredited U.S. college or university, and your degree must align with the subject you'll be teaching. Adjunct roles and visiting positions can qualify, but the offer letter must clearly describe teaching duties rather than purely administrative or research functions.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Professor positions?
TN has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and no USCIS petition requirement for Canadian applicants entering at the port of entry. H-1B requires employer sponsorship through USCIS, a registration lottery, and months of processing time. For most Canadian and Mexican professors, TN is faster and more predictable than competing in the H-1B lottery.
Can a part-time or adjunct Professor position support a TN visa?
Yes, but the role must still meet the core TN classification criteria: teaching at an accredited institution in a subject tied to your academic credentials. Part-time appointments are generally acceptable, but CBP may scrutinize positions with minimal teaching hours or those that blend heavily with administrative duties rather than instruction.
Where can I find Professor jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. It filters Professor openings by TN visa sponsorship, so you're not sifting through listings from employers unfamiliar with the process. Canadian and Mexican applicants can narrow results to institutions that have actively hired international professionals under TN status.
How long does TN status last for a Professor, and can it be renewed?
TN status is granted in three-year increments with no statutory limit on renewals. Canadian professors can renew at a U.S. port of entry or through USCIS. Mexican professors renew through a U.S. consulate in Mexico. As long as you maintain a valid offer from a qualifying employer, renewals are straightforward.
