Transportation Engineer Jobs in Chicago: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a transportation engineer job in Chicago?
Focus on employers tied to Chicago's infrastructure priorities: the Chicago Department of Transportation, the Chicago Transit Authority, the Illinois Department of Transportation's district offices, and regional civil consulting firms. Candidates with experience in traffic signal systems, multimodal corridor design, or freight rail planning have an edge in this market. Familiarity with Chicago's CDOT project pipelines and Metra or CTA expansion programs makes a resume stand out locally.
Which companies hire transportation engineers in Chicago?
Chicago transportation engineer roles are posted by Stantec, GFT, and CDM Smith and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. The local market includes a mix of public agencies, large engineering consultancies with Chicago offices, and regional planning firms serving the Midwest corridor.
Are there remote transportation engineer jobs in Chicago?
Yes, though remote availability is limited for this role since much of the work involves field inspection, site assessment, and agency coordination that requires physical presence. About 33% of transportation engineer openings tied to Chicago are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to be in traffic modeling, transportation planning analysis, and grant or policy work rather than project field roles.
How can I get a transportation engineer job in Chicago with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Chicago is through the Chicago Department of Transportation's junior engineer programs or entry-level roles at regional consulting firms that staff large public works projects. Engineering technician and project coordinator positions at firms supporting CDOT or IDOT contracts are common stepping stones. A degree in civil or transportation engineering plus coursework in GIS or traffic simulation software gives early-career candidates a practical edge for Chicago's project-heavy market.
Which industries hire the most transportation engineers in Chicago?
The sectors hiring the most transportation engineers in Chicago are Consulting & Professional Services, Technology & Software, and Retail, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Chicago's role as a national freight and transit hub, combined with ongoing infrastructure investment tied to the city's capital plan, keeps demand concentrated in public works, transit, and civil consulting.
