Truck Driver Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a truck driver in California?
To become a truck driver in California you need a Commercial Driver License issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles. The path starts with a CDL learner permit, which requires passing a general knowledge test and any applicable endorsement exams at a DMV office. Most candidates complete a CDL training program at a California community college or accredited truck driving school before taking the behind-the-wheel skills test. A valid DOT medical certificate is also required before driving commercially.
Which companies hire truck drivers in California?
Employers hiring truck drivers in California right now include McLane Company, Ace Hardware, and EXPRESS, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's size and its role as the nation's largest import gateway mean these carriers and distributors maintain some of their largest regional fleets in the state year-round.
Which California cities have the most truck driver jobs?
Fontana, Fremont, and Holtville are the California cities with the most truck driver openings. Los Angeles and the surrounding Inland Empire drive the highest volume, fueled by the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach and the dense concentration of regional distribution centers there, while Fresno serves as the logistics hub for Central Valley agricultural and food-distribution freight.
Are there remote truck driver jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of truck driver openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which reflects how hands-on the work is by nature. The roles that occasionally list as remote or flexible are dispatcher-side or fleet coordination positions that overlap with the truck driver classification rather than seat-behind-the-wheel driving roles.
How can I get hired as a truck driver in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing a CDL-A training program and applying directly to carriers that run paid CDL training or apprenticeship programs for new drivers. Large California-based distribution operations, including grocery chains and parcel carriers with regional hubs in the Inland Empire and Central Valley, regularly hire new CDL graduates into local or regional delivery roles. Starting in a local box-truck or straight-truck role with a Class B CDL and then upgrading to Class A is also a well-traveled route in California's market.
Where can I find and apply to truck driver jobs in California?
You can find and apply to truck driver jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to California locations. Search the listings for roles that match your CDL class, endorsements, and preferred route type, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
