About this Role
We are looking for a Senior Electrical Design Engineer to contribute to the development of the next generation of silicon photonics based artificial intelligence accelerators and interconnect products.
In this role, you will lead board and system solutions that leverage Lightmatter's technology to enable advanced machine learning, artificial intelligence, and large-scale interconnect platforms.
You will lead and own HW systems efforts, collaborate closely with teams across hardware and software, including mechanical, packaging, and IC engineering, to design, integrate, troubleshoot and release system-level products at the leading edge of innovation.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the system architect and technical leads to define system-level hardware requirements and spec
- Electrical design of power, memory, and interconnect circuits, working in both the analog and digital domains
- Identify electrical and optical components to fit the application based on specifications provided by the IC and photonics engineering teams
- Starting from fundamental concepts and system considerations you will develop conceptual designs, physical modeling, and simulations of chip-modules and systems
- Oversee and review PCB layout designs, providing complete and detailed electrical constraint rules
- Ensure the board and system is manufacturable to the latest technologies with high yield and robustness
- Qualification of chip and system electrical properties
- Perform laboratory validation of boards and systems
- Lead integration with mechanical, software, IC, and other related teams
- Support contract manufacturing during prototype and production phase to resolve any issues
- Work with component vendors and other supply partners

Which companies sponsor visas for electrical design engineers in California?
Defense and aerospace contractors such as Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, and Lockheed Martin sponsor electrical design engineers, though some roles require security clearances that limit eligibility for non-citizens. Outside defense, companies like Qualcomm, Apple, Tesla, and Bechtel have consistent histories of H-1B visa sponsorship for electrical design roles across California's major metro areas.
Which visa types are most common for electrical design engineer roles in California?
The H-1B is the most common visa for electrical design engineers in California. The role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation given its requirement for a bachelor's degree or higher in electrical engineering or a closely related field. Canadian and Mexican nationals sometimes qualify under the TN visa category, which lists engineers as an eligible profession and does not require a lottery.
Which cities in California have the most electrical design engineer sponsorship jobs?
San Jose and the broader Bay Area lead in volume, driven by semiconductor and electronics firms concentrated in Silicon Valley. San Diego is a strong hub for defense electronics and wireless technology companies, particularly around the Qualcomm and defense contractor ecosystem. Los Angeles supports aerospace and power systems roles, while Sacramento sees demand from utilities and infrastructure project firms.
How to find electrical design engineer visa sponsorship jobs in California?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically to roles that offer visa sponsorship, so you can search for electrical design engineer positions in California without sifting through listings that don't apply to international candidates. The platform surfaces employers with documented sponsorship histories, which is particularly useful in California where the mix of defense, semiconductor, and clean energy employers makes the market harder to navigate without context.
Are there any California-specific considerations for electrical design engineers seeking visa sponsorship?
California's prevailing wage requirements under the H-1B program are generally higher than the national average due to the state's elevated cost of living, particularly in the Bay Area and Los Angeles. Universities such as UC Berkeley, UCLA, and UC San Diego feed strong pipelines of OPT candidates into local electrical engineering roles, meaning many California employers are already experienced with visa sponsorship processes.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored electrical design engineer jobs in California?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
