In our fast-paced, device centric world, Apple is constantly innovating to meet the ever growing demand for cutting-edge features. We’re seeking a talented engineer to join our Sensing Product Design Architecture team and help us set the standard for excellence, creativity, and innovation. As a senior member of our Architecture team, you will be pivotal in shaping the fundamental mechanical design and performance of sensing modules. You will leverage advanced analytical and numerical methods to develop robust, data-driven design solutions for some of Apple's most challenging and cutting-edge features, ultimately defining the foundational performance of products used by millions worldwide.
Description
Lead the architectural mechanical analysis and performance modeling of advanced sensing modules, focusing on robustness across diverse operating conditions and manufacturing variations. This includes leveraging expertise in finite element analysis (FEA), closed-form analytical solutions, and comprehensive tolerance analysis to drive fundamental design decisions. You will work with a talented multifunctional team to generate design concepts and quantify performance impacts through complex analytical models for various sensing technologies within Apple’s portfolio of products.
Responsibilities
- Lead the architectural mechanical analysis and performance modeling of advanced sensing modules.
- Proactively identify, quantify, and mitigate complex mechanical risks and design trade-offs early in the product development lifecycle through rigorous analytical modeling and simulation.
- Work with cross-functional teams to generate design concepts and quantify performance impacts through analytical models.
- Clearly articulate complex technical concepts, analysis results, and design recommendations to cross-functional teams and leadership.
- Drive consensus on optimal architectural solutions, fostering collaborative decision-making.
Minimum Qualifications
- BS and a minimum of 10 years relevant industry experience
- BS in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
- Deep understanding of advanced mechanical engineering principles (solid mechanics, materials science, heat transfer).
- Proven experience with data-driven design using statistical analysis (e.g., Monte Carlo, DoE) and tolerance analysis.
- Experience designing for a high-volume production environment; consumer electronics or sensing is a plus.
Preferred Qualifications
- Expert proficiency in 3D CAD software (e.g., Siemens NX, SolidWorks, Creo) for the creation, modification, and preparation of mechanical designs specifically for advanced analytical modeling and simulation workflows.
- Demonstrated mastery in advanced computational mechanics, including Finite Element Analysis (FEA), to model and predict complex multi-physics behaviors (e.g., structural, thermal, vibrational, fatigue) critical to the performance and reliability of sensing modules.
- Expertise in analytical programming languages such as Python or Matlab for advanced data analysis, scientific computing, numerical simulations, and workflow automation. Experience developing and deploying scalable analytical tools or web applications to empower broader engineering teams is a significant advantage.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a proven ability to distill complex technical findings for diverse audiences, drive cross-functional alignment, and positively contribute to the engineering community through technical leadership and mentorship.
Pay & Benefits
At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $184,700 and $324,800, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
Apple employees also have the opportunity to become an Apple shareholder through participation in Apple's discretionary employee stock programs. Apple employees are eligible for discretionary restricted stock unit awards, and can purchase Apple stock at a discount if voluntarily participating in Apple's Employee Stock Purchase Plan. You'll also receive benefits including: Comprehensive medical and dental coverage, retirement benefits, a range of discounted products and free services, and for formal education related to advancing your career at Apple, reimbursement for certain educational expenses - including tuition. Additionally, this role might be eligible for discretionary bonuses or commission payments as well as relocation. Learn more about Apple Benefits

Which companies in California sponsor visas for product design engineers?
Apple, Google, Meta, Tesla, and Qualcomm are among the most active sponsors for product design engineers in California, based on Department of Labor LCA filings. Medical device firms like Edwards Lifesciences and Boston Scientific also sponsor regularly. Consumer electronics and semiconductor companies headquartered in the Bay Area and San Diego tend to have established immigration infrastructure and sponsor across multiple seniority levels.
Which visa types are most common for product design engineer roles in California?
The H-1B is the most common visa for product design engineers in California, as the role typically meets the specialty occupation standard when tied to a degree in mechanical engineering, industrial design, or a closely related field. The O-1A is an alternative for candidates with documented recognition, awards, or published work. Candidates with Canadian or Mexican citizenship may qualify for the TN visa under the engineer category.
Which cities in California have the most product design engineer sponsorship jobs?
The San Francisco Bay Area, particularly Cupertino, San Jose, and San Francisco, accounts for the largest share of product design engineer sponsorship jobs in California, driven by Apple and the broader consumer electronics cluster. Los Angeles and San Diego are strong secondary markets, with San Diego anchored by Qualcomm and the medical device sector, and LA supported by aerospace and mobility companies.
How to find product design engineer visa sponsorship jobs in California?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for roles open to visa sponsorship, including product design engineer positions in California. Rather than sorting through thousands of general postings, you can search directly for California-based employers who have indicated sponsorship willingness. Migrate Mate is particularly useful for identifying hardware, consumer electronics, and industrial design roles across the Bay Area and Southern California markets.
Are there state-specific factors that affect visa sponsorship for product design engineers in California?
California's high cost of living means prevailing wage determinations for product design engineer roles typically fall in higher DOL wage tiers compared to other states, which can affect what employers are willing to offer. California also has a strong university pipeline from Stanford, UC Berkeley, and UCLA, meaning competition for sponsored roles is significant. Employers in regulated industries like medical devices may require additional licensing considerations that affect the sponsorship timeline.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored product design engineer jobs in California?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
