Tips for Finding CPT Jobs in North Dakota
Start with NDSU and UND career offices
North Dakota State University and the University of North Dakota have dedicated international student career centers that maintain relationships with regional employers familiar with CPT documentation. These offices often have unpublicized internship listings that never reach general job boards.
Target energy sector employers in the Williston Basin
The Bakken oil and gas region around Williston actively recruits petroleum, mechanical, and environmental engineering students for CPT internships. Companies operating in this corridor are experienced with work authorization paperwork compared to employers in other North Dakota industries.
Align your CPT start date with agricultural hiring cycles
Agribusiness employers in the Red River Valley typically hire CPT students for spring and summer rotations tied to planting and harvest seasons. Applying in January through February gives you the best chance of securing a position before internship slots fill.
Search Migrate Mate for North Dakota CPT-eligible roles
Migrate Mate filters jobs by visa sponsorship type, so you can search specifically for F-1 CPT positions in North Dakota without manually vetting each employer. This is especially useful when targeting smaller regional firms that sponsor less visibly.
Engage civil engineering and infrastructure firms in Fargo
Fargo has a growing infrastructure and construction sector with firms that regularly take on civil and structural engineering CPT students. These roles often convert to OPT positions, making them strategically valuable beyond the immediate internship.
Connect with North Dakota Trade Office for corporate introductions
The North Dakota Trade Office facilitates relationships between international students and businesses with global operations, which tend to be more comfortable sponsoring CPT. Attending their networking events can open doors at employers not actively posting internship listings.

Which industries in North Dakota sponsor the most F-1 CPT visas?
Energy, agriculture, and civil engineering lead F-1 CPT sponsorship activity in North Dakota. Oil and gas companies in the Williston Basin, agribusiness firms in the Red River Valley, and engineering consultancies concentrated in Fargo account for the majority of CPT internship placements. Healthcare and information technology are smaller but growing categories, particularly around Fargo and Bismarck.
Which cities in North Dakota have the most F-1 CPT sponsorship jobs?
Fargo is the clear leader for F-1 CPT opportunities in North Dakota, driven by its concentration of technology firms, engineering consultancies, and proximity to NDSU. Bismarck, as the state capital, offers government-adjacent roles and healthcare internships. Williston is a specialized hub for energy-sector CPT students in petroleum and environmental engineering fields.
What types of roles typically qualify for F-1 CPT sponsorship in North Dakota?
Roles that qualify for F-1 CPT in North Dakota are those directly related to your declared major. Common qualifying positions include engineering internships in oil, gas, and civil infrastructure; agricultural science and agronomy roles; computer science and software development positions; and business analysis roles at regional financial or agribusiness firms. The role must be integral to your academic program.
How do I find F-1 CPT jobs in North Dakota?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international students and filters job listings by CPT eligibility, saving you from manually confirming which North Dakota employers accept F-1 CPT workers. Pairing that with outreach through NDSU and UND career services gives you access to both publicly posted positions and internships filled through university employer relationships.
Are there any state-specific considerations for F-1 CPT sponsorship in North Dakota?
North Dakota's employer base skews toward smaller regional companies and family-owned agribusinesses that may be unfamiliar with CPT paperwork. It helps to approach these employers with a concise one-page explanation of how CPT works and what they are required to do, which is typically minimal. Your designated school official at NDSU or UND can provide employer-facing documentation to simplify the process.
