Comprehensive School Counseling and Ogden School District recognize the importance of the transformational role of the school counselor which includes teaming, collaboration, leadership, and the use of data to effect change. The school counselor is expected to play an active role in the school improvement process, aligning data-driven systemic counseling program goals with the school and district goals. The secondary school counselor works as a leader and collaborator in the school to provide academic, personal, social, and life skills development opportunities that are necessary for student success and lifelong learning. This focus on alignment plays an integral role in preparing students to be college and career-ready students. The approach of the school counselor should be preventative and proactive in nature. The secondary school counselor must be willing to work as a leader, teacher, and collaborator at every level of the school system.
Leadership:
- Serve as a leader in the school environment and work with the team to develop plans to address school goals and challenges in working towards meeting the district goals of graduation and literacy.
- Work with the school counseling team to provide shared leadership and expertise. The counselor works with the administration, faculty members, and other stakeholders to establish rigorous academic standards, develop a supportive learning environment, and promote equity through systemic practices.
- Work with school and district leadership to implement a College and Career Readiness School Counseling Program Model at the school site.
Essential Functions:
- The Education Transition Career Advocate (ETCA) will oversee educational, career, and transition planning for court-involved youth.
- Assess students' educational and employment goals and develop individualized transition plans.
- Connect youth and families with community resources, including WIOA, Vocational Rehabilitation, 211 services, school districts, social skills programs, FAFSA, college applications, and other support services.
- Assist students and families with applications and referrals to educational, vocational, and community programs.
- Collaborate with families, case managers, therapists, probation officers, advocates, and other stakeholders to support student success.
- Attend and participate in Family Team Meetings to provide updates on student progress, concerns, and educational records.
- Represent students at school meetings, including IEP meetings, to advocate for appropriate educational services.
- Attend Youth Parole Authority (YPA) and Juvenile Court hearings to advocate for students and coordinate with the school district.
- Track and oversee certification, career, and postsecondary opportunities for students residing at Mill Creek Youth Center.
- Develop transition portfolios for students upon parole to support continued education and employment.
- Serve as a member of the District Student Advocacy Team and Multi-Agency Committee.
- Attend bi-weekly MAS meetings and collaborate with community agencies to support Youth in Care.
- Maintain knowledge of Probation, DCFS, Youth in Care (YIC), Juvenile Justice Youth Services (JJYS), and Juvenile Court processes.
- Monitor and track program data for multiple Malan's Peak programs.
- Prepare annual reports for the Utah State Board of Education (USBE) to support funding requirements.
- Maintain accurate documentation and ensure strict confidentiality of sensitive student information.
- Advocate for students' educational rights and successful transition to postsecondary education, employment, and independent living.
- Build partnerships with schools, agencies, and community organizations to improve student outcomes.
- Coordinate College and Career awareness in an ongoing process to establish personal goals and develop future plans for students.
- Provide leadership and be actively involved in the intervention process for dropout prevention through systemic use of data. Be willing to work with students, families, and community resources to support student success.
- College and Career support - providing multiple opportunities for students to participate in college and career readiness/awareness activities. Work with students to establish personal goals and develop future plans.
- Implement and provide responsive service as needed for identified needs: bullying, grief, transitions, mental health needs (SEL), divorce, etc. (groups and individualized goal-focused counseling as short-term interventions)
- Support Tiered intervention including academics, attendance, and behavior. Work with school leadership to create and facilitate an intervention program to address issues within the school environment including the Child Assistance Team, PBIS Team, Attendance Interventions, etc.
- Align with feeder cone schools to collaborate for effective transitions to secondary programs.
- Align with school programs to provide information and coordinate information including CTE Pathways, Concurrent Enrollment, IB, AP, STEM, etc.

Successful candidates must have a Masters degree in School Counseling and be eligible for the Utah School Counselor License or obtain one by July 1 of the upcoming school year.
