Work Schedule: Work schedule includes both regular office hours, regular night and weekend hours and some holidays. Exempt Salaried Position.
Basic Function: Assist the head fencing coach with the daily operation of the varsity fencing program and recruitment of qualified athletes. Assist the head fencing coach with team selection, designing and leading practices, strip coaching at meets, player development, and holding players accountable to team, department and university rules and values. Assist with administrative duties, including scheduling, making team travel and meal arrangements, home meet management, meet video analysis, etc. Assist the head coach with giving individual lessons to student athletes, particularly in weapon of specialty. Lead small and large groups of students in practice and in discussions and team meetings.
Essential Job Functions:
- Identify and contact prospective student-athletes for the recruitment process
- Travel to Summer Nationals and occasionally other fencing events for recruitment purposes. Arrange campus visits and generally assist the head coach in recruitment duties.
- Assist the head coach with preparation for and leading of men’s and women’s varsity practice.
- Assist head coach with lessons in weapon of specialty and possibly in other weapons.
- Work with each student athlete as well as the team to establish clear goals
- Travel with team to all meets and assist with strip coaching.
- Assist with the planning and administration of team travel, recruiting, budget, student-athlete eligibility, and academic progress.
- Attend athletics department meetings and events.
- Participate in fundraising and community service efforts, as appropriate and assigned.
- Assist head coach with all inventory and maintenance of equipment.
- Good interpersonal skills, including tact, diplomacy, and flexibility.
- Outstanding leadership, management, and interpersonal skills to relate to a wide diversity of faculty, staff, students and community members.
- Ability to speak before large and small groups with evident poise and enthusiasm and ability to effectively motivate team members.
- Strong administrative and organizational skills, with ability to follow up and review, to ensure that no details are overlooked and that all arrangements have been made.
Willingness to teach the Intro to Fencing Course or another PE course as directed, or to help out with other varsity sport home meets as needed.
Abide by all university, NCAA, CCFC, and EWFC rules.
Actively participate in the university community. Serve on appropriate department and university committees as needed.
Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree is required.
Experience as a player or coach in NCAA fencing or significant club coaching experience is preferred.
Must possess an understanding of NCAA Div III and conference rules and regulations.
The successful candidate will have a strong work ethic, be an active and positive problem solver, have strong interpersonal communication and organizational skills, and be able to relate to students and colleagues in a positive manner.
Preference will be given for coaches with a specialty in sabre or epee. Multiple weapon expertise is a plus.
Must have a current and valid driver’s license and be insurable under Denison’s liability insurance policy.
