Automation Technician Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a automation technician in Texas?
Texas does not require a state-issued license specifically for automation technicians, so the path runs through education and industry credentials. Most employers look for an associate degree or technical certificate from a Texas community college or technical institute in industrial automation, electronics, or mechatronics. From there, earning a vendor credential such as a Rockwell Automation Certified Technician certificate or a CSIA-recognized certification strengthens your candidacy considerably with Texas industrial employers.
How much do automation technicians make in Texas?
Automation technicians in Texas earn a median of about $54,460 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $41,890 for the lowest 10% to over $105,640 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire automation technicians in Texas?
Employers hiring automation technicians in Texas right now include Apple, AutoNation, and Tetra Tech, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of energy refineries, semiconductor fabs, and aerospace facilities means demand runs year-round across both large corporations and regional integrators.
Which Texas cities have the most automation technician jobs?
Austin, Dallas, and Houston have the most automation technician openings in Texas. Houston's petrochemical and energy refining complex drives the largest share of postings, while Dallas draws demand from its dense manufacturing and logistics corridor, and San Antonio's growing semiconductor and defense manufacturing base keeps a steady stream of openings active throughout the year.
Are there remote automation technician jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. Automation technician work is fundamentally hands-on, requiring direct access to equipment, control panels, and production floors, which limits remote arrangements. About 11% of automation technician openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those tend to concentrate in roles focused on remote monitoring, SCADA programming, or technical support rather than physical maintenance and commissioning.
How can I get hired as a automation technician in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a registered apprenticeship or co-op program attached to a Texas technical college. Employers like Emerson and Valero partner with community colleges across Houston and San Antonio to recruit graduates directly into junior technician and maintenance tech roles. Candidates coming from adjacent positions such as electrician helper, industrial maintenance assistant, or production operator have a strong lateral move argument. Holding a CompTIA Electronics Technician or NFPA 70E certification gives entry-level candidates a measurable edge in Texas interviews.
Where can I find and apply to automation technician jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to automation technician jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings across industries and metros. Find roles that fit your experience and location, then apply directly to the employer through each listing.
